Sennheiser HD 280 Pro Headphones - Silver

Position-independent audiometer headphonesType approved by the German Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt

Excellent reproducibility of measurementsSoft, exchangeable ear padsSpace-saving design with collapsible

Rotating earpieces Comfortable to wear due to exchangeable headband paddingSingle- sided

A truly professional set of headphones for the discerning listener! Hear what you want to hear! The HD 280PRO from Sennheiser produces thrilling true-to-life sound, while keeping outside sound where it should be, OUT. Compatible with 3.5mm connectors, these headphones fit around the ear. These are collapsible, and interfold to fit into small spaces. Neodymium magnets are built in for maximum SPL.

This review is from: Sennheiser HD 280 Pro Headphones - Silver

the folks at Sennheiser must not have large heads. As with about every pair of headphones that I try on, I had to extend these all the way to fit. After a few months of daily use, the plastic headband began to develop small cracks. Now the cracks are growing and I fear that the whole thing will just snap one day. Unfortunately, that is one of the parts that isn't listed as replaceable.

That said, people who look at this headphone are looking for: a) quality sound synonymous with the name Sennheiser b) excellent noise reduction.

a) The sound from these phones is excellent. The standard criteria are there. The signal is very clean, thanks in part to the oxygen free copper cabling used. Bass is controlled and precise so a timpani doesn't sound muffled. Higher frequencies do not hiss and the phones are able to drive high frequency sounds and pull out details lost by consumer grade headphones. Soundstage is fairly narrow as some have said, but much better than consumer sets that sound like the sound source is inside your head. Of course, a DSP solution for soundstage expansion could help if someone didn't like the soundstage.

What people should realise is that most music is optimised for listening on a stereo system and not headphones. A search for "binaural music" will yield samples that show how music should be sampled for headphones. Anyways, the HD-280 Pros also have 64 Ohms of resistance so an amplifier isn't needed.

b) The biggest impression I got from these phones is silence. Not total silence, since with the headphones on I could still hear outside noise. Once the music starts playing, however, music is much clearer because background noises have been attenuated so effectively.

That was the biggest attraction of these headphones. For my sound processing work, ambient noise from my computer and the outside world are suppressed admirably. 32 decibels is a lot of sound attenuation, far more than the Active Noise Reduction sets from Bose or even Sennheiser. The HD-280 Pros use passive noise attenuation. This means that for the phones to supress outside noise effectively, they have to be tight. They are very tight in fact. Four Newtons of force are applied, a number significantly larger than most headphones. If it weren't for the thoughtful padding, they would feel as uncomfortable as firing range headsets. Passive noise attenuation also means there is no artifacting from electronic noise that is usually the case in Active Noise Reduction sets.

If you have a very large head, a solution is to find in-ear phones (the expensive Etymotics sets have even better sound quality and noise reduction). If you are sensitive to tight headphones, a solution might be the Active Noise Reduction sets (although they aren't as good sonically). If you listen to sound in a very very quiet environment, Grados or some other Sennheisers would probably get you that better soundstage for the money.

If none of these situations applies to you, then these phones will provide better sound through their native excellent quality and their superior noise attenuation. After all, the listening experience with Sennheiser 600's on an Audigy 2 card or a tube amplifier is diminished with that noisy computer fan in the background.

All in all, these phones are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

*** UPDATE, October 20, 2009 ***

Wow, well these headphones are still ticking after over six years and I'm pretty rough with my equipment! Cheap headphones break after six weeks for me because the cable gets pulled or I mess up the speaker so these Sennheisers are pretty solid.

Just as I feared though, the plastic HAS cracked and you can see the thin wires (covered in plastic or rubber) exposed. Now that most of the plastic on the headband has broken off, the fit is quite a bit looser though the headband is still held together by a wide piece of metal. I just wish they would just make a nice metal headband to avoid the plastic cracking issue.

While I like the fact that they aren't so tight, I don't like the fact that richness (low-end midrange and bass) suffers because of it. You can simulate this when listening by pulling the headphones slightly apart. It isn't noticeable on light music though and might not be an issue with newer versions of the HD-280 Pro.

The ear cushions on my 6+ year headphones are worn past the leatherette, past the foam and to the foam backing layer. The top is looking ratty as well. Replacement ear cushions are around $20.00 which isn't cheap. I'll probably skip that in favor of a new pair of HD-280s - especially if they've been redesigned for larger heads as some people are indicating. I'll keep this pair around as beaters until they quit on me. However, now that I've quieted my working area, sound isolation isn't as critical to me as it was before so I might take a look at other Sennheisers....

This review is from: Sennheiser HD 280 Pro Headphones - Silver

These cans are currently being offered well below MSRP -- no, they aren't in danger of being retired any time soon (confirmed with Sennheiser customer service) -- and are truly the best bang for the buck. Despite the very positive reviews, I had two reservations about purchasing the 280s: 1) the tight, uncomfortable fit; and 2) cracking in the plastic headband that some have commented on. I have a big ol' head where adjustable ball caps barely fit me. The 280s aren't tight at all, but rather comfortably snug -- what do you expect from a closed design? Shooting range ear protection/muffs are 3 times more tighter than these. Secondly Sennheiser claims to never having heard about the cracking issue but will repair/replace your unit with no questions asked under their 2 year warranty.Although plastic in design, the product has a solid, quality construction (made in Ireland if you care). An advantage, as you may already know, is that most of the components are designed to be replaced due to wear or damage. I like the folding convenience of the 280s, but don't expect them to fit in your coat pocket. After burning these puppies in for 24 hours, the audio quality truly impresses with details I've never noticed before in my Definitive Technology and A...

These headphones are comfortable and fold nicely into a very small package which can easily be stored in a laptop bag or purse. The headphones do cancel outside noise pretty well. However, the ear pieces did not seem to cup or seal well enough to prevent noise from 'leaking' in....

This review is from: Amp\'d Mobile XQS-109 3.5mm Noise Cancelling Headphones

Hey Matas Empakeris! Remember, these headphones are intended for use in noisy environments, such as trains, planes and automobiles. Just bought this 1 week ago and it *does reduce* surround noise. Of course, if you try them out at home in a silent environment, you hear some noise. But even then you still have the option of turning the noise cancelling off and use them as ordinary headphones.

As for the fit, you may have a point, I have experienced more comfortable headphones than this one. But then again I have no problem to keep them on during a train ride of 40 minutes easily. I use them with or without music on (just for the noise canceling). And, for 17,00, this is really a bargain. At least I'm happy with it. Fits perfectly with my smartphone....

This review is from: Amp\'d Mobile XQS-109 3.5mm Noise Cancelling Headphones

I was looking for noise cancelling headphones. I didn't want to pay to much for these headphones, as I reckoned that using these on the move, they are likely to break at some stage. Also I don't require top quality, as I only want to make sure I can hear the sound in noisy areas (specifically planes), which I can't with my standard earplugs.

These headphones seem to be the perfect choice. Just got them, and did a quick test in my room with the tv loud. When you turn on the noise cancelling the music sounds louder and seems to give a surround sound. Either way, it improves the experience as I can hear less of the tv. Eager to try it on the plane.

I like the soft bag that comes with it, and the fact that you can fold the headphones to fit in the bag. As it is a soft bat, it won't do much for protection though.

Just some caveats:

- initially the cord on the phone, seem to have the same plugs on both sides; if you plug it the wrong way around though the sound is very metallic and totally distorted; first I thought I had a faulty unit until I switched the cable around and everything was fine; the manual says that one side is 3.5mm L-plug and the other side a 3.5mm I-plug

- it comes with a set of different adapters (2 different 2.5 mm adapter, usb adapter (not sure how to use this), 2-pin airplane adapter), which is great; when I tried either of the 2.5 mm adapters, these seem to be mono adapters though, as it just gave me sound in one ear; so I bought a stereo 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter, and it worked great

- the batteries did not work; when I put them in, and switched the noise cancelling on, the light did not come on; so I had to buy some new batteries, after which things worked fine

Last point, I see that the price has gone up. One month ago, I paid USD 20. It mentioned that it was the last unit in stock. Still even with the new price, good value for money and I do recommend it.

...

This review is from: Amp\'d Mobile XQS-109 3.5mm Noise Cancelling Headphones

I bought these because all the fancy people I know would always swear by their Bose noise cancelling headphones. [...] After a bit of internet research, I stumbled onto these and they got great reviews overall.

I bought them specifically for use in airplanes. I don't know about cars or trains but they work GREAT in the air. I noticed the first time I used them that I arrived a lot less fatigued than usual. It was a much quieter ride. Anyway, I like them so much (especially for the price) that I bought two more just incase I loose or break the set I already have. I never do that.

Also, I have a giant head and these fit fine. They could be a littl bigger but if I don't complain with my massive noggin, they will probably work fine for you. Good luck!...

If you have paired the headset with other Bluetooth devices, make sure that the headset is on. Press and hold the Talk button until the blue indicator light stays solid blue after blinking. When you turn on your phone after pairing with the headset, the phone is connected to the headset by pressing the Talk button Frequently Asked Questions What is the benefit of Bluetooth technology? Bluetooth technology allows you to communicate with other Bluetooth-enabled devices without wires or the careful alignment of devices. With nothing to hold or plug in, and with no distractions, you can be wire-free and hands-free with the confidence that your connection is secure. Will my headset work with laptops, PCs, and PDAs? Your headset will work with devices that support Bluetooth version 1.2 and higher. However, both Bluetooth devices must support the same Bluetooth profile(s). Will anything cause interference with my conversation when I am using my headset? Appliances such as cordless phones and wireless networking equipment may cause interference with your conversation, usually adding a crackling noise. To reduce interference, keep the headset away from other devices that use or produce radio waves. Will my headset interfere with my car's electronics, radio, or computer? Your headset produces significantly less power than a typical mobile phone. It also only emits signals that are in compliance with the international Bluetooth standard. Therefore, you should not expect any interference with standard consumer-grade electronics equipment. Can other Bluetooth phone users hear my conversation? When you pair your headset to your Bluetooth phone, you create a private link between only those two Bluetooth devices. The wireless Bluetooth technology used in your headset is not easily monitored by third parties because Bluetooth wireless signals are significantly lower in radio frequency power than those produced by a typical mobile phone. How far apart can my Bluetooth devices be while still maintaining connection? Typically, this Bluetooth can maintain successful voice, data, and audio connections within a 30-foot range.

This review is from: Samsung WEP475 Bluetooth Headset (Black)

I have been wanting to get a new blue tooth device and when I saw the price of this I figured I couldn't go wrong. It was on sale for $13.99 with a $10 rebate so ended up costing $3.99. I like that it is really small so fits in my pocket when I'm not using it. It has a detachable transparent ear hook that helps it stay attached, although I prefer to use it without the ear hook. I also like the on/off switch so I can turn it off when I don't plan to use it and can save on the battery that way. I have had two other blue tooth devices in the past and people would always complain that they couldn't hear me or that the background noises were too loud. With this device I have had no complaints. The reason I gave it 4 stars is that the earpiece has a little round silicon piece that fits around the earpiece to help keep it in your ear or to be more comfortable in the ear and it has fallen off a few times. The last time it fell off I wasn't able to find it and now it doesn't fit so well in my ear anymore. In spite of that, I am happy with it and would recommend it....

This review is from: Logitech Premium Stereo Headset with Noise-Canceling Microphone

I bought this device for recording podcasts and chatting with my friends on Skype, Gizmo, and Paltalk. I have been extremely impressed with the quality of the headphones and microphone.

First, about the headphones: They are quite comfortable (for me at least), and produce a nice, bass-rich sound. The volume control is nice, because the last set I bought produced sound that was way too loud, and I would get a shock if I didn't lower the volume greatly when switching from speakers to headphones. This set produces a more even sound.

Second, about the microphone: I am very pleased. This microphone puts my older microphone (a Labtec microphone from 2001) to shame, and saves me from having to clean up my recordings in Audacity to get rid of excess hum and noise. I was impressed that the noise-canceling feature really works well. Also, I can talk using a normal, conversational voice and the microphone picks it up clearly. The microphone can be adjusted up and down, and toward and away from your mouth, making it very easy to find the best location for the microphone in relation to your mouth. The sound quality is so excellent that as soon as my friends heard me talk with this microphone, they wanted one. I gave them a link to this product and they will order it soon.

Overall, I couldn't be more pleased. While I haven't compared this headset with other headsets, I can tell you that for the price, the quality is excellent, and I will be recommending it to all my friends as an affordable, high-quality headset with microphone....

This review is from: Logitech Premium Stereo Headset with Noise-Canceling Microphone

I purchased this headset for use flying online with MS Flight Simulator. It was a good headset to start with and had very good sound, however I noticed a problem with it right away. The earpieces are fairly hard and pretty small making it uncomfortable to wear after about an hour of use. I was constantly having to rub my ears, but that problem didn't bother me all that much.

What bothered me is the extremely short lifespan of the microphone. I purchased this headset in January and the mic died at the end of February. Not a good product by my standards. It seems to be a flaw with the boom joint as it seems to have a loose connection in it. I wiggled it and was able to get the mic back for a few hours, but it once again died on me and I haven't been able to recover it since. I've given up on it. Time to purchase a better one!...

This review is from: Logitech Premium Stereo Headset with Noise-Canceling Microphone

My husband bought two pairs of these, one for each of us. Before opening the second package he had me try his on since he felt they were uncomfortable after a short time. At first it seemed alright except the ear pieces didn't fit quite right on my ears. The sound put my regular speakers to shame and I was very impressed by the tiny details I've been missing in my World of Warcraft music. However, after wearing them for a short time, they became uncomfortable on my ears and also where the band sits on top of my head. Although the audio quality is excellent, I would not recommend these for any hardcore gamers that plan on wearing headphones for extended periods of time for voice chat....

This review is from: Plantronics CS50-USB VoIP Wireless Headset

I was provided this device by my employer to use with my Cisco IP Phone. What follows is a review I wrote for my Strategic Sourcing Group.

OK I have had a week and a half to play with this device.

At first it installed and worked well. The one immediate drawback is that it does not work with Both the physical and the soft phone like the one I originally ordered. It is only Soft Phone compatible. Also, I immediately noticed how difficult it is for me to rear the other end unless there is no background noise at all.

Pros:

* I am being told the sound being delivered to other parties is EXTREMELY clear and has no delay.

* It is very light weight on the ear and comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

Cons:

* It doesn't work like the manual states.

o USB Charging does not Work

o Blue Tooth Binding Keeps disappearing. I have to redo it every day and it takes several tries.

* The volume the users hears doesn't go loud enough. I have to strain to hear if there is any competing back ground noise.

* The device is HUGE for traveling and packing in a laptop bag. It is about 4 times larger than the other model.

* The bag they provide to put the pieces in for travel is too small to put the device in.

* The ear piece pops off too easily and can get lost.

* Stored settings, like volume, have to be reconfigured every day.

Essentially I started out really liking this unit. Now I hate it. So far today I haven't even been able to use it because it won't charge at all, even on AC. If you put it on your ear it does a triple beep every few seconds. Incredibly annoying. What is even worse is that now I am 100% dependent on it for a phone now because my desk phone disappeared during the cubicle moves. So now it is my only "work" phone and it doesn't work.

Is there any way I can just get the device I originally ordered? I desperately need a head set for all the hours I spend on the phone. This one is just not reliable enough to be used, nor is it practical for mobile users, it takes up half of my laptop bag.

Great price and it works well for my 2 sets of computer speakers. Please note - the description states a 6-feet cable, however it is only 6 INCHES (as seen in the picture)....

This review is from: Sennheiser CX 300-II ECO BLACK Bass Driven Recylable Stereo Earbuds

I've owned CX300 in ear monitors for a few years now and have been greatly impressed by their comfort and performance. While on a flight to Zurich I left them on the plane and was unable to retrieve them so on my layover I bought a pair of CX300II not realizing the difference. The obvious differences are the components of the II's are of much higher quality (litz wire, gold plated jack and case among other things). The sound is perceptibly better. I was obviously delighted by the find that my lost CX300's afforded me! I listen to a lot of music and couldn't imagine being more satisfied with the musical balance of these phones. I recommend them highly.

p.s. for those of you who don't know, the asymmetrical length of the right and left cords is so the longer "right" cord goes behind the neck and the "main" cord comes down from the left side of your head....

I just received my order from Ace Photo Digital for both a Sennheiser CX300 and a CX300 II, both are high quality earbuds, especially for the price! Soon AFTER I ordered them I was concerned when I saw all the web sites describing "fakes" that are sold on eBay and even on Amazon.com. Well, after looking at about 10 websites with pictures comparing fake to real, I am convinced these are real. And email correspondence from APD was timely [custservice(at)[...]] and they told me "Not to worry, no fakes here. We buy directly from Sennheiser." I believe them. The shipping worried me but it turned out the Postal Service never scanned in at any location, so no tracking at all and I wasn't sure they were coming but they did. So all is well with this supplier and they are not fake (see my reasons below).

The point is that when I ordered the 300 buds, Ace Photo Digital is NOT the first supplier that comes up on the list to order from, so by default they would have come from somewhere else. I can't speak for the quality from the "first" supplier but people are complaining their's are fake and I assume they are from the first supplier and not APD. No of course I don't work for APD and never heard of them before, but it is good information to find a supplier you can trust as not everything on Amazon is the same apparently, so I give credit where it is due and hope it helps you!

Also I noticed that some other reviews are VERY old and I'm not so sure which item they are reviewing anymore - things change a lot since 2006, even what Sennheiser ships may have changed!

On to the 2 Sennheiser earbuds features...

I already knew I wanted earbuds and I picked these for 2 reasons: price/performance/value and physical size.

In my local trusted [...] I asked what is the sweet spot for price/performance and then followed up online by reading reviews. The other reason is I want earbuds and I don't want them to stick out too far like the older high end Shure ones used to at least. The store said the SkullCandy ones are maybe tolerable for the price (maybe 10 dollars online), and the best higher priced ones were the Sennheiser (I forgot the model) and Dr. Dre and Sure, but the sweet spot were these Sennheiser's. I don't know about the other Senn models in comparison but I like the price of the 300's.

Obviously anything sounds 10x better and is more comfortable than the junk that ships with most cheap MP3 players, that is a given. But these are as great as I would expect from Sennheiser, a great company. Both the 300 and 300 II sound great to me and I am comparing them to about 5 sets of good earbuds in the last 25 years. They have come a long ways, especially the noise isolation style nowadays...

These Senn's are a type called "noise isolation" (blocks the noise by sealing in the ear canal very well, as opposed to actively changing the sound electronically like "noise cancelling" types). I like this style for airplane traveling on long overseas flights, and for wearing on a motorcycle. Sure the active noise cancellation style works better but the good ones are not earbuds and don't fit into your pants pocket when you get off the plane and travel in a taxi, car, bicycle, on foot, etc. The fact that they don't stick out away from the ear very far is great for: resting/sleeping with your ear on a pillow, fitting under a full motorcycle helmet (not legal in some states), or with no helmet on they minimize wind noise hitting them if you at least have a basic windshield on your bike.

The other HiFi earbuds I use that are similar are from around 2004 and are Etymotic ER6 (now replaced by ER6i) but I paid over $120 for them. I haven't compared the sound yet but I think the Senn's are louder (more efficient) than the ER6 which is a problem on a motorcycle, the ER6 would not go loud enough as they are very inefficient. The ER6 also have very thin wire which is always getting tangled when I put them on. The ear canal silicone like part has 2 pieces and over time it itches my ear at the seam between the two. I haven't worn the 300's for long yet but they don't feel as tight and I think they will stay in but be more comfortable for long periods of time.

Why I think these are not fake:

Main things that convinced me were: the 300 had plastic packaging with a lot sticker inside it on the bottom, the shape of the black plastic and screen over the driver itself (remove the ear canal covers to see this), the position and shape of the aluminum colored housing, the plug (which is large and gold on the 300 II), the type of wire. Only the 300 II comes with a black carrying pouch, and one website showed it inside and out with fabric, stitching, size of Sennheiser lettering, all of which convinced me this one is real. A pouch is handy.

Comparison between 300 and 300 II:

I personally can't tell a difference in sound quality. I'm not saying they are the same but to me they are both great. You can bump up the bass of the source and it can really crank it out, and the highs are crisp, on both of them.

Like I said the 300 II comes with a soft case but the 300 doesn't. You can always find something like a small ziplock baggie (go to Ace hardware in the loose nuts and bolts section and ask for small ones!).

One thing I do not like about the 300 II is that it has an oversized L-shaped plug, which would be fine except it sticks out so far from my little tiny MP3 player that it is a bit cumbersome and I am a bit afraid it acts like a lever and if it got hit i...
