bought two pairs of these earphones for long international flights. they are fine as plain earphones, but very expensive for that function alone. the noise canceling function was thoroughly ineffective -- on either set, it made no discernible difference whether noise canceling was on or off. I would not buy these earphones....

I agree for the most part with the other reviews at the time I write this, I would add that they do have a BIT of noise cancelling, but not what you would expect from the way they are advertised. I did several tests (making noises in the background while playing music through these)and realized that if the volume is lower, you can detect SOME noise cancelling, but hardly worth mentioning. Like the one review states, it is more like a volume booster when switched on.
The sound quality impressed me, and they fit comfortably, however, the only other headphones I have used with my iPod are the factory style, which are really terrible. I think any other headphones or earbuds would be better than those that come with an iPod. I got a really great deal on these from Musician's Friend - they had a one-day sale for $19.99. At that price I would highly recommend them, but at twice that price or more, I think I would shop around for others.
Additionally, they come with a really sweet "hard case" for protection that can clip on your belt or whatever with a "climber-style" hook. The case is worth $5 by itself.

I thought that these headphones were great to use in the office. It got rid of distant background noise and the noise of me typing on my computer, but I was able to still hear people in the hallway talk. I guess it cannot completely eliminate all sounds, though. I definitely like these headphones because they are ear buds and they were still able to cancel some noise out, meaning that I didn't have to wear the big bulky headphones to get the same effect. The sound quality of the headphones were great....
