This review is from: AKG K 28 NC Headphones

It is unfortunate that whoever did the physical design for these headphones chose such a goofy folding design, because if it weren't for that, these would be excellent headphones.

The sound quality is excellent. The bass belies the small size. The bass may even be too strong for many, but it is quality bass, which is to say that it is reasonably uniform over the bass frequencies, and without the muddy sound that typically accompanies drivers that are underdamped. The frequency response is very uniform over the full audible range, and there are no obvious resonances or peaks anywhere. The noise cancellation circuitry works as well as any noise cancelling headphones that I've ever used or listened to.

Notwithstanding all that, I still can't recommend these headphones, because the folding design is goofy and highly annoying. If you study the picture, you will see that the hinges that allow it to fold on each side, are not oriented at right angles to the band. The hinges are set at an angle, so that instead of folding straight, one side folds toward one the front and the other side folds toward the back. There was no reason to do this, because the earcups are easily small enough to fold up within the band and still close the band most of the way. The intent was that the two earcups also rotate, so that they rest against each other face-to-face. They won't quite do that in the way that you would expect, because the pivots won't allow them to rotate far enough for that. It works better if you rotate the cups the other way, so that the backsides of the cups rub against each other. But it is still just goofy and annoying. Each and every time that you use them, you will look at it and wonder what in the world possessed someone to do this this way.

The stretchy sack that comes with it is just barely large enough to hold the headphones alone, much less the separate module. The two plug adapters just toss into the sack, and sooner or later they will fall out onto the floor of an airplane or train or whatever, never to be seen again.

The cord is ungainly, mostly due to the excess length of the section between it and the headphones. The headphones are able to be much lighter as a result of the separate module, but thus far no one has figured out a good way to do this. Because of the extra length of the cords, you can sort of it configure it however you like, by shortening one or the other of the two cables. You can find or make a small spool of sorts on which to wind the extra cord. I reduced the length of the cord between the headphone and the module to less than half what it was originally, so that it it works well for when the module is in my shirt pocket. The other option would be to use small wire ties and make it as though the headphones and the module were both connected into the plug.

The headband is also uncomfortable. The pads on the two points where each half of the metal band terminates with the other part sliding through, are much to hard to be comfortable. I wondered why this was different from the similar Koss headphones, so I compared the two. The Koss headphones have a much thinner pad, and the surface under the pad is completely flat. AKG chose to incorporate a rim on the four sides of that little square, with a recess for the pad. In effect, the greater thickness of the pad was made necessary by that recess, which was put there, ostensibly, for the pad. The recess is not needed, and were it not for the recess, the pad itself would not need to be as thick or as firm. I replaced the pads with some softer foam, and I added a short length of cloth-covered neoprene to the underneath of the metal band....

This review is from: AKG K 28 NC Headphones

These cans produce nice big sound from a small source but, compared to the Bose QC3, the active noise reduction isn't good enough. They're lightweight and comfortable but at the expense of a permanent six feet of wire with mid-line battery belt clip. A good first attempt by AKG but the design and noise reduction need some attention -- which explains why you can find them for about $90....

This review is from: JVC HAFX34B Marshmallow Headphones

After reading a couple of negative reviews, I was skeptical, but the positive ones had me intrigued. I am very glad I bought these. They sound wonderful, and are comfortable. Yes, make sure you put them in right. I was pleasantly shocked at the richness of the sound. Great also for being in noisy environments, yard work, etc. One would use these when they don't need to be connected with their surroundings, so don't ride a bike with them--unless you're in the open country, and careful if you jog in the city or on a path that's shared by bikers. All I can say is these sound great on my iPod. The bass is rich, the mid and high ranges are strong and clear. At this price, this is a terrific find. Will be getting at least another pair. They do come with a second set of earbuds, which is nice....

This review is from: JVC HAFX34B Marshmallow Headphones

It would be helpful, although probably not realistic, to get to know more about reviewers who rate audio products. To wit; I really don't care about a review complaining about lack of bass response from one of those individuals who cruise around with their hatch open and the volume up so loud that the bass from their washtub sized subwoofer rattles windows in homes and buildings. Likewise, self proclaimed audiophiles who nit-pick a product based on charts and numbers leave me cold.

In my world there are three issues that are important relative to ear buds. In order of importance they are: (1) comfort (If their not comfortable, I'm not going to wear them no matter how good they sound. My wife gave me a pair of conventional earbuds that sounded great, but after three days of use, my left ear was so sore that I couldn't put them in.), (2) sound quality (Do they deliver a good bass without fuzz or distortion and midrange and high notes without sizzle.), and (3) price (Here's a tip. If the manufacturer offers an "easy payment plan", you can probably find something just as good for a lot less). Based on these criteria, I give the JVC HAFX34 Mashmallow's five stars.

These are the most comfortable ear buds (or for that matter, headphones) that I have ever used. They fit in my ear perfectly and I can wear them as long as I choose without discomfort. I can even sleep with my ear on a pillow while these are still in with no problem.

After reading some negative reviews about these buds sounding tinny, or having a lack of bass response, I immediatly brought up some of the songs I use to evaluate phones. Quite frankly, I was blown away by how good these buds sounded. I listen to music from what I like to think of as the golden years of top 40 music. This includes several genre of music (yeah, it wasn't all rock 'n roll) and artists range from Montovani to Floyd Cramer, and Carl Perkins to U2. One of my favorite bands to use in an evaluation is Creedence Clearwater Revival. In songs like "Run THrough the Jungle" they have a really thumping bass and some really high pitched lead guitar. These buds transfered it all clearly and distinctly, without fuzz or sizzle. I have never heard a background hum (but I can hear my own breathing). A couple of times since I received these FX34's I've found what I thought might be a shortcoming in their performance, only to find that the fault was in the source material (they didn't call them "garage bands" back in the 60,s for no reason) and not in the buds. These buds also seal out any peripheral noises, much like ear plugs do. That would make them dangerous to use around traffic, but great for "zoning out" around the house.

With a price under $20, these are a steal. My only regret is that I couldn't get a case of them.

Well, that's my two cents worth. For me, these are the best bang for the buck around. I realize that one man's drink is another man's poison, but if you're in the market for ear buds, I would give these serious consideration.

...

This review is from: JVC HAFX34B Marshmallow Headphones

I bought a pair of these in the Denver airport-for quite a bit more than Amazon is charging. The spongy earphones are just like foam hearing protectors so they cancel out airplane noise wonderfully and don't take up more room doing it. I no longer have to crank my Sansa up to dangerous sound levels to hear it above road or airplane noise. I also use them on an electric travel guitar with a pocket rock-it preamp that you can plug 1/8" headphones into.

The earphones have to be squished down like a hearing protector to fit in your ears and then they expand. If you just try to mash them in your ears, they will fall out. I would not recommend these earphones for any kind of athletic activity-if your ears get sweaty they will fall out. I would also not recommend them for bicycling or jogging - they cancel out too much road noise and would leave you not able to hear approaching cars.

Some other reviews complain of tinny sound but I have not experienced that....

This review is from: Sennheiser PC 166 Binaural Multimedia/Gaming Headset with Noise-Canceling Microphone

So I work on a video conferencing product as my day job, so I have been through a fair few headsets at this point. My last pair was a plantronics dsp 500, before that I had a series of logitech usb headsets. So, here is my 2p:

This headset is quite good- i have a pair of grado 225s that soundwise blow away anything with a microphone attached- but this is one of the better sounding headsets i have tried for awhile (i listen to music- not gaming). The sound level on the cans is a little quiet, it could use a little amplification- but all in all they the sound you do get is excellent- very even across all frequencies, as you would expect from sennheiser. The microphone sound is good, low noise, very good for conferencing. There is a manual volume control and an on/off switch, and it does come with a nice little spool to wind up your cord into (no auto wind unfortunately).

One other thing to note here is that this is a usb dongle with a sennheiser headset, so you could theoretically use this dongle with other non-usb headsets-

In comparison to what else is out there I would take this one over the plantronics sets any day- my first set of plantronics were defective (one speaker was broken)- amazon graciously replaced them- and my second plantronics had a horrible microphone buzz, and the headset sounded generally muddy when used for listening to music. Also, even the portable plantronics are hard to haul around because of the bulky dsp component that is attached to the cable- it creates a cable snarl wherever it goes.

The other sets I have used, the logitechs (all different types), have all fallen apart in some way, including wires falling out, ear pieces falling off, losing fuzzy parts, etc- and the audio playback was mediocre at best, though the microphone was ok- you get what you pay for and if you only want to spend $20 then they aren't bad-

Anyhow I hope that helps someone else trying to make the same decision- there are a number of other gaming oriented headsets out there I haven't tried yet- so ymmv- but i would take the sennheisers over the plantronics at this point....

This review is from: Sennheiser PC 166 Binaural Multimedia/Gaming Headset with Noise-Canceling Microphone

I'm not an audiophile; I'll get that out of the way right here.

This review is from the viewpoint of someone who can appreciate good sound as well as a good value.

These headphones are expensive, and I was semi-afraid that I was just buying into a name when I bought these. I can safely recommend them, despite the price, because they are worth the cost for a few reasons:

- If you find yourself using headphones for more than a few hours at a time (work, games, whatever) then you're, no doubt, familiar with how your ears will start to hurt after a while, and you'll want to take them off for a while. I'm not kidding at all when I say that it feels like they've put pillows on the ear pieces. This is easily my favorite part about these headphones. Very, VERY comfortable.

- The sound quality is better than any other pair of headphones I've owned. To be fair, I don't own any that would claim to be better in the first place, so the best I can say here is that they're clear and responsive.

- The mic quality is good. I haven't had any complaints from people on the other end of a conversation.

- The included soundcard module (which, of course, you don't have to use) I'm not sure about. I haven't directly compared with and without. It's somewhat of a pain when you have to go into sound configuration settings to switch between headphones and speakers, if you use both.

- These are also "open ear" - If you're playing music loudly, people close by will be able to hear it faintly. It keeps outside noise out relatively well (I wouldn't use them for sound isolation, though.)

All in all, highly recommended....

This review is from: Sennheiser PC 166 Binaural Multimedia/Gaming Headset with Noise-Canceling Microphone

I am extremely satisfied with purchasing the PC166's.

I'm sort of an audiophile, but not obsessively so and the sound quality is phenomenal. I bought a Sennheiser headset because I previously had a set of closed-ear Sennheisers which I was content with. As of late, however, they have been irritating my salivary glands, so I had to go for a pair of on-the-ear headphones and I thought I might as well get a headset for gaming while I was at it.

I thought I would sacrifice some sound quality by going to a non-closed ear set, but I was pleasantly surprised. Bass is full and satisfying and the microphone quality is what you'd expect from a high end headset - clear, concise and intelligible.

I bought these headphones for comfort alone and I was not disappointed. They're very lightweight and the extra padding on the ears is very comfortable. I wear headphones many hours throughout the day and they're comfortable throughout.

I really don't have any complaints about this headset. If you have the money to spend and quality is important, this is a very good buy....

This review is from: Sennheiser CX 680 Sports Earbuds with Volume Control and Earfin Holding System

I have been on a quest for a new pair of earphones for weeks. I have spent countless hours reading hundreds of reviews on various models. My main criteria (in order of importance) were: 1) Don't fall out when doing strenuous exercise like running, 2) Won't cease functioning or experience a decrease in functionality due to sweating (I sweat profusely when exercising, e.g., my clothes are normally drenched after an hour of cardio), 3) Comfort, 4) Price, 5) Sound quality, and 6) Appearance/Style.

Based on all that I read, I decided that the new Adidas-branded Sports line from Sennheiser might be the best option for me, so I splurged, got the CX680 at a big box store, and decided to test them since I knew I could return them for a full refund within 30 days if not satisfied. If I liked them I knew I could purchase online for 25-30% less. Note that I prefer the in-ear design, but was also considering the neckband design of the PMX680 as an alternate. However, I was hoping to find one pair that I could use for cardio, weightlifting, leisure, and travel.

First, I will explain what comes in the package. You get:

(1) SYMMETRICAL earphones with a 30" cord and a straight jack

(2) a 24" extender with a volume control on one end and an "L" jack on the other

(3) a Velcro carrying pouch

(4) 3 sets (S,M,L) of earfins, 1 set of M covers w/o fins, and 3 sets (S,M,L) of earbud covers

(5) a clip

(6) a cleaning tool

My assessment of each of these components:

(1) Short Cord: Used w/o the extender, the earphones are best worn using an armband (either arm is fine due to the symmetrical cord) with the cord clipped to the shirt on whatever side the armband is to reduce tension on the opposite side earbud. I ran for 1.5 hours last night with the cord clipped this way to the collar of a T-shirt. It stayed in place the entire time and was completely unobtrusive.

(2) Extender: The volume control is very light and can be clipped to the band of your shorts w/o adding noticeable weight. With my iPod Nano clipped to one side, the volume control on the other, and the cord beneath my shirt, there was some cord slack (I'm 5'8"), but the movement was not excessive and not disruptive. The wheel of the volume control has a slight resistance to it so that you won't mistakenly blast out your eardrums while adjusting it.

(3) Pouch: The pouch is good quality and roomy enough to hold the earbuds and a small music player. However, the cords do tend to become entangled easily.

(4) Earbuds/Earfins: With some trial and error I was able to find the right combination of fin and earbud that fit comfortably and didn't fall out with movement or sweat. I've had more difficulty finding the correct fit for my L ear, but even during a 1.5 hour run I only had to adjust the bud once b/c the fin had moved (Note that the earbud itself was still firmly sealed).

(5) Clip: As mentioned above, the clip work great when attached to a collar and probably would also with a hem. I tried to use it in the middle of my shirt and it simply fell off. There's a groove on the top that seemingly is supposed to hold the wire but it does not; you simply have to clip the wire along with the clothing.

(6) I have yet to use the cleaning tool.

Now on to how the CX680 ranks using my criteria.

(1) Fit & Staying Power, 5/5: These things stay put. I've had the stock earbuds which do not fit my ears well, fall out with movement or sweat, and sound crappy. I would imagine that most people should be able to find an earfin/earbud combination that fits them well. I like that this product is customizable rather than one-size-fits-all.

(2) Sweat Resistance, 5/5: More than any other pair of earbuds I've owned, these seem to be unaffected by sweating. They do not loosen when sweat is in the ears and their rubberized materials seem especially sweat "proof". I have not yet tried to put them in water. I would hope that these do not as easily succumb to the issues common with other earphones that seem less sturdy/durable. Even if they do fail at some point, at least with Sennheiser you have their 2 year warranty (another reason I chose these over something with only a 90 day warranty).

(3) Comfort, 5/5: I don't even notice I've wearing them.

(4) Price, 3/5: These certainly are not the cheapest earphones on the market, but they are new and will likely come down in price. The cheapest I've found is $70 online with free shipping. I would highly recommend buying them locally, seeing if they work for you, and then returning them and buying them for cheaper online. If you've got something that works for you now, I'd say wait for the price to drop on these. If money is no concern, just buy them!

(5) Sound quality, 3/5: I'm not an audiophile and I didn't get these b/c I wanted the best sounding buds, and they're not. I listen exclusively to electronic music and they're OK, but slightly lacking in bass. Not sure if "tinny" or "muddy" are the correct terms, but I've thought that my music sounded better with JBuds J2s (but they would fall out when I'd sweat and shorted out after a year), with Acoustibuds attached to stock earbuds (these sound great and actually stay pretty well during movement and sweating but they're bulky, have to be twisted into the ear canal, and it's challenging to find the sweet spot as far as the "best" position for maximum effect), or with over-the-head models (these offend my sense of fashion). The CX680s are not bad, just not the greatest sounding, but I'm willing to sacrifice on music quality to eliminate them moving around, falling out, or breaking b/c of sweat damage.

(6) Appearance, 4/5: I don't know why Sennheiser thinks it necessary to make their Sports lines in bright, obnoxious colors (neon green, orange, and now yellow), instead of more muted grays, blacks, or whites, but these are OK. I'm not using them to win any fashion contests, and they're more appealing, IMO, than the neckband, over-the-ears, or over-the-head models.

In summar...

PROS: moisture resistant, excellent sound (after 'treble reducer' eq and removing earfins so they would fit correctly in my ear), great stability.

This review is from: Sennheiser HD 205 Studio Monitor DJ Headphones w/ Swivel Ear Cup

The Sennheiser HD 205 is great value for money. The design is not only comfortable, but takes out a lot of ambient noise. This headphone does not have active noise reduction but does a good job with its closed design headphone.

The right-side is able to swivel backwards, so you can answer a phone call and not need to remove the whole headphone. This swivel was designed for DJ's to do sound mixing, but works well for other purposes as well.

I also like its strong bass and great clarity, where I could hear sounds in music that I did not hear before. This headphones not only works well for music, but does great with your favourite action movie. You will hear how close the sound is, and have bullets whizzing past you and swords meeting like they are just around you.

While there are unquestionably better-sounding headphones available, you'd be very challenged to find something better-sounding at this price point. Other pluses include deep, powerful bass response without being "boomy," the closed-back earcups provide excellent isolation & makes the HD205 a good choice for use in noisy environments or when others around you might be disturbed when you crank the volume, & the 32-ohm, highly efficient drivers make this a good match for iPods & other portable music players - lets you play 'em loud, while still being gentle on the battery! I have a moderately large head (Size 7 1/2) so I initially found them too tight, as some other reviewers have mentioned. Sennheiser tech support suggested gently stretching the headband by placing them over something slightly larger than my head (sofa arm, computer tower, etc.) and leaving overnight. That did the trick for me, although I needed to repeat the procedure once more, about a week later....

This review is from: Sennheiser HD 205 Studio Monitor DJ Headphones w/ Swivel Ear Cup

I've just purchased a pair of these and have been using them for about a week now. I use them for mixing and mastering music in my studio. The sound quality is great; very clear and good frequency response. The 1/4" adapter screws into the 1/8" plug which is fantastic for what I'm doing. (I'm a little rough with cords when I'm working) They are a bit tight on the head and a bit small in the ears. I don't have a very large head or ears, so it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, it's nice to have them a bit tighter so I can thrash about and they won't fly off my head easily. I was a bit concerned about my ears hurting from the small cups, but I have not experienced any pain yet and I generally spend anywhere between 2 to 8 hours with them on. All in all, these are a fantastic deal for the price, but I wouldn't buy them if you've got yourself a decently-sized to a large head. Small heads only....
