Bose QC15 vs. Sennheiser PXC 450 vs. Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b

Disclosure: I have tried all these on an airplane. I am not an audiophile. Noise Cancelation is the most important attribute to me.

The Carrying Case: All three are quite durable and stiff.

1.) Bose- the smallest, a low profile, room for an Ipod, accessories too.

2.) Sennheiser- Square shape, low profile, however not a lot of room for anything else in case.

3.) Audio Technica- Nice big case if you want to carry extra stuff (Nintendo DS, ipod, etc).

Build Quality:

1.) Sennheiser- you can tell this is built VERY well. Strong plastics, good components, thick cord. Top notch. You feel like you are getting something really high quality.

2.) Audio Technica- Nice solid construction, appears durable.

3.) Bose- If this had a Sanyo logo on the side, I would not have flinched. How can something $300 be so incredibly cheaply made.

Size:

1.) Bose- as far as over the ears go, these are pretty small.

2.) Audio-Technica- mid-sized.

3.) Sennheiser- These are big. No question, but they store flat.

Comfort:

1.) Sennheiser- Very comfortable, will fit almost any size ears. Keep on for hours.

2.) Bose- Also comfortable. I did not experience "highs" discomfort.

3.) Audio-Technica- Perfectly satisfactory. Larger opening than previous AT model.

Sound:

1.) Sennheiser- I actually wore these at home too, simply to hear parts of songs I had never heard before. Astounding. My 10yr old music collection sounded totally NEW.

2.) Audio-Technica- Well balanced, good sound.

3.) Bose- Great sound, but very heavy on the bass. I listen to a lot of rap and pop, so it was mildly annoying. I ultimately had to turn my treble settings up on my ipod to balance the sound.

Features:

1.) Sennheiser- nice cord, push to talk button (temporarily mutes NC and sound which is great for interruptions on airplanes).

2.) Bose/Audio Technica- just the basics. Bose simply an on/off switch.

Price:

1.) Audio Technica- $150 to $225 depending on how you shop.

2.) Sennheiser- $200 to $275

3.) Bose- Hard to find below $300+.

Noise Cancelation:

1.) Bose- No question here, far surpassed the other two. Best Noise Cancelation.

2.) Audio-Technica- Good Noise Cancelation.

3.) Sennheiser- Not sure what happened here. Incredible sound, satisfactory noise cancelation.

Summary:

I ultimately kept the Bose because I was only using these for flying and the Sennheiser's (as much as I loved them) let me down in the Noise Cancelation department. The Sennheiser's had by far the most superior sound, but the Bose Noise Cancelation was night and day. The Bose are made very poorly for a $300+ product, it was disappointing.

Final assessment:

Audio-Technica- best balance of value for money

Sennheiser- Best sound and comfort

Bose- Best Noise Cancelation

I bought 2 interphones before going on vacation. We put them on our helmets and off we went. We both had 3/4 helmets, and going down the road at 70 there was so much wind noise it was hard to understand but you could still hear. On vacation I bought a flip up full face helmet and that made all the difference in the world. These things are really great, it kinda all depends on how much the wind is blowing with a 3/4 but with a full face you can hear no matter what speed.

I would have rated 5 stars but it states that the talk time is 10 hours, we did not get any where close to that leaving the unit on interphone continuously, but if you just turn it on interphone just when you want to talk and then put it back on standby then it lasts all day. Leaving it on interphone all the time, we just got about 2 to 3 hrs talk time.

Also it would be great if you could communicate with more than just 1 other unit like when you are traveling with several people. We had some friends that went with us and they bought them also, but we could not communicate with them just each other. Overall it is the best thing out there...

The BlueAnt Interphone works as advertised with good volume and clarity. It's weakness is it's short battery life. We have used them on several rides and marvel at the way they function as a Bluetooth with the Zumo and phone, but it is the bike to bike communication that is really great. It says in the advertising that they reach 490 feet, however we have had up to a half mile separation and still had communication. You can carry on a conversation as if you were sitting next to someone on the sofa. After about 4 hours, you're out of battery and all is lost. You'd think that in today's era of 8 to 10 hour rides that an otherwise excellent device such as this would be able to last the ride. There's no way to charge the battery on the go or replace the battery with a spare. You have to put the unit on the 115v charger to get it to work again. I really can't reccomend this product unless you intend to use it only for short trips....

To say this unit really works well is an understatement. I connect my interphone to my motorcycle GPS via bluetooth (a BMW Navigator III [made by Garmin]). At the same time I connect my cell phone(Motorola V505) to the GPS via bluetooth. My GPS automatically switches between the voice GPS directions and cell calls.

A buddy and I both have interphones in our motorcycle helmets and we communicate on the road via bluetooth using the intercom feature. The range is spec'd as 500ft, but we find the functional distance closer to 1000ft. One can switch back and forth on the fly between the bike to bike intercom and the GPS/Cell Phone using the multifunction button on the interphone.

Battery life is good for a whole day's riding in the intercom mode. In the standby mode the battery life is definately many days, because I sometimes forget to shut off the interphone.

This is the best device of its kind I have ever seen. It gets rid of CB radios for bike to bike communication, with a constant hot mike (no keying required). Many kudos also go to my BMW GPS Navigator III and its ability to manage the Cell Phone and GPS directions. It also displays the Cell Phone address book, shows the ID of incoming calls, etc. etc.

So far so good, I just received this product today. Normally I do not like to purchase a product that does not have any reviews, but this one seemed to fit my needs and the price point was not a overly large investment. The item shipped in a timely fashion and arrived in retail packaging. Overall, the construction of the headset is sound, included were multiple sizes of the ear pieces, a neck lanyard, lapel clip and a storage pouch.

The lanyard and clip attached easily to the cord, having the lanyard will be nice as I do not always wish nor have the ability to have both speakers in my ears. I did not have any troubles with the fit in my ears, either. I know fit is a personal consideration and these fit much better then the OEM headphones that come with the tour.

Sound is good, now I am no audio expert by any means, but I spent the day testing them through various music and talk shows. Phone conversations with this headset and the Blackberry tour were clear, I could hear what the other person was saying clearly and the other person was able to hear me clear, without the tunnel sound that other sets seem to have a problem with.

For the Price point this is a great set for your phone and general music listening needs. I Will probably keep a pair of these for a back up pair as well....

First off, I have a Droid X.

I had high hopes for this headset, and at first, it seemed to do its job. There didn't seem to be any problems. The audio quality was ok - I was listening to an audiobook on my phone, and everything seemed to come out much more muffled - annoying, yes, but not as big of a deal when you're just listening to music.

However, once I really started using it to talk on the phone, the cheap quality of this product really showed. The plug was tempermental, in that if you moved it at all, there would be shots of extremely loud static. I got frustrated a couple of times with this, and just left my phone sitting on the table so the wire wouldn't move, and there was STILL static, just more constant. Then as a result, I couldn't talk to people on the phone with this because neither one of us could hear each other.

Then finally, I just used it to listen to music on my phone as I was walking around campus. My phone stops play when it feels that the headset is no longer connected (to ensure that I'm not accidentally sharing my music with people around me). And I realized that my phone's music player would just stop every minute or two for this reason. This was not ever an issue when I'd been using my old earphones, so I know it has to be a problem with this headset.

All in all, save yourself the trouble - this headset is absolutely horrible. Don't buy!...

One of the best ear phones I've ever purchased. Works as it should, bass is awesome.

I've used it for listening to music, chatting, watching movies etc. Works perfectly

One of the downsides that I've found is that it becomes uncomfortable after a certain time period.

However, rarely do i ever use in ear headsets so I'm not used to having things in my ear. But, most definitely, worth the buy!...

Like many people, I was tempted by the good reviews but reluctant to pay so much for a pair of tiny earphones. Finally, almost 2 years ago, I bought a pair.

Like all of the other reviews here state, the Shure E2c's sound GREAT. They are very balanced, and let you hear the subtle details of your music, making the music almost come alive in your head. They turn your MP3 player or Discman into an audiophile-quality stereo system.

The E2c blocks outside noise by forming a very tight seal in your ear. In contrast, "noise canceling" earphones, such as the popular ones by Bose, do not block outside noise from reaching your ear, rather they add their own electronically generated noise which is supposed to cancel out the outside noise. I've never had good results with the various noise canceling headphones I've tried; plus, they require batteries to generate the noise-canceling noise. The E2c's block noise without batteries, and without adding any artificial noise or discoloration to your music. It works very well. I especially appreciate it at gym, on the bus or subway, and on a plane. (Warning - PLEASE don't wear the E2c's while driving or bicycling or any other time that safety requires your full attention!)

The build quality of the E2c's is very good - the cord and plug are thicker and sturdier than competing earphones. For 2 years, I heavily used and abused my E2c's, especially at the gym. Literally hundreds and hundreds of times, I've plugged and unplugged them into my various MP3 players, hastily wound and unwound the cord, and tossed them into my gym bag, usually without using the protective case that comes with the E2c's. Despite the very good build quality, my heavy use led finally to a short: when the cord was wiggled in a certain way, the sound on the left side would briefly go out.

I went to Shure's website and saw that they have a 2-year warranty. I sent my E2c's to Shure for repair, hoping it would be covered by warranty, but prepared to pay if Shure felt the problem was due to wear and tear (because, in fact, it was). Two weeks later, I received from Shure a BRAND-NEW PAIR of E2c's - they decided the problem WAS covered by the warranty, and wanted me to have a new pair rather than repairing my old ones!!!

This is more than I expected, and will make me a repeat buyer of Shure products! I especially appreciate this level of service given the lackluster support I've received from so many other companies.

I am totally into these noise-cancelling earphones and they perfectly complement my iRiver mp3 player/recorder in sound and color. Once you've gotten over their higher price point, have followed the enclosed instructions exactly and begun to use them, there is no going back to the normal, flat sounding buds. They isolate exterior noise and that is a boon if you live in a noisy environment, like NYC infamously is.

Experiment with using the foam vs. the flex sleeves to your taste. I've stuck with the smallest of the three sized flex sleeves and after two days testing my ears were used to the slight increase in pressure.

A warning: be careful not to turn the volume up too high in public as one needs to be able to know when her/his attention is required, among other things. Be extra aware of traffic when on the street. Also, high volume just is not necessary as ALL exterior racket (subways, curse-laden conversations and car horns) is rendered mutedly surreal.

Also, be mindful of its carrying case. I've had my pair for almost a year now and the case's cable spool has bent the cord's wire covering to such an extent that it is now exposed. Far be it from me to walk around town like a super-geek w/ electrical tape on mine; I plan to replace them with one from amazon's marketplace sellers for cheaper when Santa comes around this December. But be advised to remove the interior cable spool completely and keep the headphones rolled up manually before placing them inside the case. The case is very durable, zips up securely, is nonbreakable, has a soft protective interior and is lightweight.

One other observation -- use q-tips and rubbing alcohol to regularly clean the flex sleeves if you decide to use those. The foam probably would just wear out completely. Shure's website does sell replacment sleeves (both foam and flex) for $10-$12 each w/ 5 pair included, which is nice.

I honestly would have given the product five stars if it wasn't for the breaking of the wire cover coupled with their already high price. The warnings above should keep yours in good working shape for years though and this is a great investment for all digital audiophiles. :-)...

I wanted to get the Bose QC3s for sometime now,[...] I just liked the supra-aural style better than the original Triport headphones. I was hoping that Bose would come out with a non-noise cancelling version of the QC3, and these are it! As soon as I learned that Bose had released these headphones, I quickly placed the order for them.

I got these last week and have been listening to music like crazy with them, both on my computer and on my iPod. These phones are not noise-cancelling models, but they still block out a noticeable amount of noise. You can wear these in a room and block out the noise of cars outside, the A/C, etc, while still being able to hear someone speak to you. I think these would work ok on a flight, but definitely not the best; that's what the QCs are designed for. I'm no audiophile and the only time I've ever tried Bose headphones before these were the demo Triports and QC2s at the Apple Store, so I can't say anymore about the sound than that it is terrific. It definitely is a balanced sound, with the bass at a perfect level and not too-overpowering. The trebles also come out pretty clear too. I was pleased with the sound over my old Sony EX-81 earbuds, which have a muddy and hissy sound compared to these. The bad thing about the sound quality is it really emphasizes how badly compressed some of my mp3s have become, which may not be a good thing if you don't have the original CDs for some of your music. I would give the sound quality five stars, but I warn you again that I'm no audiophile.

The fit of the headphones takes some getting used to, as Bose's design is quite unique. These phones are on-ear being that they are designed to be worn like those cheap headphones that you would get with your walkmans and portable CD players back in the days before mp3 players. However, Bose put cushioned leatherette pads which conform to the shape of your ear; when you put them on, you need to allow several seconds for the pads to adjust and form the perfect fit for you. Once this is done, you are all set to go. The phones do not press on you ears hard; I think they are very gentle and should be good for prolonged use without having to take them off once in awhile. I also wear eyeglasses, and the cups definitely don't press down hard on my glasses. I would give fit 4 1/2 stars.

These headphones come with a semi-hard zipper case similar to what is included with the QC models. The case is nicely padded on the inside and is custom-designed to hold the headphones when folded. There is a little mesh like pocket on the back of the case which can probably hold an iPod nano comfortably, though not a video iPod. Two cords are included: a short cord if you are plugging the phones into a wired remote control, like the iPod radio remote or similar; as well as a long standard sized cord. The cord attaches to only one cup and is detachable, so you don't have to worry about tangles. I would give the features and extras 5 stars.

And now the big con: build quality. I've read the reviews about other Bose headphones having poor-quality headbands which snapped after several months of use. Having tried the original Triports and the QC2s, I don't think Bose made much of an adjustment on strengthening the band of this model. Well, the band is definitely much stronger than the Triport, which has a thin, flimsly and skinny metal band wrapped in cloth, similar again to the cheap walkman headphones of the 90s. The on-ear's headband is very much like the QC3s: thicker than the original Triport, slightly more durable and covered in both leather and cloth. However, I still feel like after a few months these could break easily, just like people have experienced with the QC3s (and even QC2s). They do feel kind of stiff and I'm afraid already that if I pull the cups too far apart that the band would snap instantly and without warning. Therefore, I have to give the build quality 2 1/2 stars.

So my final verdict: I think these are a great design. They fit very well without any alterations or "custom fit kits" like those needed on premi...

Sony MDR-NC200D Digital Noise-Canceling HeadphonesThe obvious comparison for any noise canceling headphones, is against the Bose Quiet Comfort series - which is arguably the industry standard, at least from a familiarity and brand recognition perspective. Fortunately, I have a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort 2 and was able to do a good side-by-side comparison.

In my case, Sony edged out Bose and won this comparison. Here's why:I am not a qualified audiophile, and can't quote impressive specifications and explain in mathematics why one thing sounds better than another. Having confessed that though, I am a very picky listener, and I have a high standard of quality for audio products.

How I tested - I used the Sony MDR-NC200D's extensively in a number of environments, with a variety of music. Environments included sitting in a room with a loud TV going, other music playing, conversations taking place, outdoor traffic and lawnmower noise, and even during a long vacuuming session. Music ranged from hard rock to classical, but for my benchmark side-by-side testing I used Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon.I found the Sony headphones to be superior in producing very clear, crisp sound compared to Bose. The most subtle of elements in the audio are crystal clear with very good separation. Bose seems to muddy some of these nuisances, most likely a result of the noise canceling signal they use. Sony is able to block the ambient noise at least as well as Bose (I think slightly better) but without the side effect of dullness to the audio you are listening to. This example won't mean anything to people not familiar with the album, but during "Great Gig In The Sky" you can clearly hear the soft spoken background words far better with the Sony's than with Bose. I did not try to deafen myself with too much volume, but did not experience any distortion at all.Ergonomics - Slight edge to my Bose headphones here, but very very slight and with qualifications. My Bose set is the over-the-ear design (cups that enclose the entire ear), whereas these Sony's are on-the-ear design. The slight edge to Bose goes to a marginally more comfortable headstrap, and a more secure fit. I found that the Sony headphones were a bit easier to "shake loose" if wearing them during normal activity. The flip side to this is that the Sony headphones seem better suited for longer wear. They don't apply as much pressure to you head and are more comfortable for long periods. For an on-the-ear design, I was very surprised at the quality and comfort of the fit. The padding is extremely good...

Hi Everyone,

I just received my SE425's 2 days ago, and have had ample time to "break them in". After spending almost $300, I'm not sure if they're exactly as I expected. I previously had the Shure E2C, SE210, and SE310; all of them were wonderful in their own ways at their price points.

However, the SE425 have very similar sound to the now-discontinued and discounted SE310 even with two discrete drivers, while costing more (after SE310 price discounts). The cables are too rigid near the ears, making for uncomfortable wearing. Also, the nozzles/earpieces don't go as deep in the ear canal as previous models, but surprisingly without sacrificing sound isolation. The bass is too understated, even compared to Shure's "flat-sound" standards. The detachable cables are an amazing innovation (finally implemented), especially since my previous models have gone through 3-4 cable warranty repairs (crackling sound) while the drivers themselves were perfectly fine.

Beware, the earphone plug-in piece is quite large, making it very difficult to fit in iPhone/MP3 player cases (especially the iPhone 1st gen and iPhone 4 w/ bumper). The previous Shure models didn't have this problem, as their plug points were quite narrow.

Overall, the Shure SE425 seems more durable than previous models, but their high price point with only marginal improvements makes it slightly difficult to justify over previous Shure models, which are now heavily discounted.

I'm do not claim to be an audiophile who listens to music only through Amps and such, though I do value and understand quality audio. I mainly use these headphones with my iPhone 4 and laptop with higher bitrate songs (320 KPBS+ VBR).

....I purchased a pair of SE425 ear buds to replace a set of Shure e4c earbuds that died a premature death from wire insulation "rot" thinking that the replaceable cords would solve the problem. Well they do, but there is another problem inherent in the design that is not readily apparent....until you try to replace the sleeves with new ones. With my pair, the sleeves(only had them for 5 weeks)had become fused to the stems. So upon trying to remove them following the instructions in the manual, the stems snapped off!!! Well, with e4c buds they are replaceable but with the SE425 buds the stems are an integral part of the earbud and are NOT replaceable. My suggestion to those who purchase these is that the 1st thing you do when you get them is to try to swap out the sleeves sometime before the Amazon 30 day return policy expires. Hopefully the 2 year warranty will save the day for me. I will keep you posted!

OK.... its 2/24/11 and I got my replacements already from Shure. Great turn-around! Raised the star value up to a 4 from a 1. They sound great but I am still disappointed in the fact that the stems are not replaceable. Although the sleeves remove easier on this pair, I would guess that this will happen again s...

I am very fussy about headsets for my land line phones and find very few acceptable. I currently have three Plantronics headsets and this is the latest one. All are great, but this is the best so far at less than half the cost of the last one. I have this one on a Vtech phone with the volume on the headset at the lowest level and the volume on the Vtech at the lowest setting and everything is loud and clear for me and for person I am speaking to... on land lines and wireless phones. It is very comfortable to wear unlike the other two Plantronics I own. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED at twice the price....

I've been through way too many headsets trying to get great sound quality both on my end and for the person on the other end of the phone, and this one takes the prize so far. The model number is similar to but NOT the same as the similar one made for cell phones...but this one truly is optimized for cordless phones and does a great job. The only complaint is that the ear loop on it is less than completely comfortable, but it's a small price to pay for great sound and mobility. I use it with a Panasonic 5.4 GHz cordless phone....

I have a terrible time hearing on cell phones. My smaller than average ear canal makes it extremely difficult to find headsets that work for me. I've toyed with various bluetooth headset devices, and don't care for the silly in-your-ear units that seem to pick up as much room noise as your voice.

This unit is a little bulkier, but perfect for the car. It hangs on the gearshift when not in use, and quickly slips over the head for use. Callers like the sound from the unit, and it cancels local noise well. It's adjustable for head size, fits over a ball cap nicely, and is comfortable for hours.

It works well on either the left or right side; I tend to use it right side.

One main button controls on and off and dial/hangup. Setup is easy. Read the directions for operation and you will have no problem.

I've used it with Samsung Windows Mobile units, a Droid, and a Droid X. No problems with any of them!

Operation time is several days standing by, especially if out of range of the phone to which it is paired. It will automatically shut down to zero battery consumption. Talk time is long.....at least six hours. Charge time is about an hour to two hours.

The unit is a little delicate; be sure you put it away properly when done. If you leave it on the seat and then sit on it, it's probably toast. Be careful.

It charges from AC power, cigarette lighter, or a computer USB. Hang onto the cords; replacements are hard to find.

I've owned four of these; I keep them in separate homes and in each car.
