If the around your ear size with soft breathable material, very comfortable light weight and one of the best sounding open headphones is what you are looking for, here they are! Headphone selection can be complicated as some are more suited for recording or live band use, some mixing and many just enjoying music a most subjective aspect. So there are many models maybe way too many making it difficult, sort of picking shoes on the Internet - may or may not be the best fit or feeling.

Bass heads that want a music "blast" might find other models more to that design "taste".

I have recently tested many models and have just a few top pics at under the $300 price level and the HD518's are my best pic for all around listening. Low distortion with wide response using E.A.R. Senn's design science seems to work very well for wide choice of music. Sound quality is exceptional detailed stage with bass solid and clean as at all frequencies, complex thick dynamic music is recreated without a hint of limits. One of my favorites to grab to know just what the recording really sounds like and enjoy. No EQ required but if you want to bring up the low end some they will respond! Using a worthy headphone amp will bring out those qualities even more but not necessary unless your are an audio junkie like me.

I would consider sound character to be half way between ATH-M50s and ATH-AD700s which I believe is a very nice headphone neighborhood. The fit and long term listening comfort is about the best I have used making them a top choice. Amazon's price range $75 - $130 for entry level audiophile phones that can perform as well as many more expensive units makes it an easy choice.

I recently purchased these along with a HiFiMan EF2a, upon initially receiving the items I was very impressed with both the Sennheiser phones and and the additional amp/DAC. After giving both units about 2 days of playing pink noise through a spare PC, I settled into my chair and began listening to some tracks I was very familiar with. Some of the treble seemed a bit bright and the mids seemed muddled and somewhat vague. The bass was spectacular for an open can and far surpassed the Bose Tri-Ports they replaced. I tweaked the settings on my PC and played with the volume on the amp and found some settings more to my tastes. I still wasn't satisfied with the overall sound though. Finally, I hooked them up to my Yamaha home receiver and played the same tracks I auditioned earlier on CD. Finally the clarity and detail I was looking for. After taking some notes on certain songs I returned to my computer and plugged the phones right into my sound card. I fired up WinAmp and played the corresponding FLAC files and voila! The amp/DAC combo was adding some nasty qualities to the signal chain and even without it the volume and impact was adequate. I am returning the HiFiMan amp/DAC because in my case it wasn't needed and actually hurt the overall sound quality. As for the Sennheisers I am very happy, especially at the price. As a side note while I was shopping I auditioned some Grados (SR125 and SR325) and I liked them but I found the treble a little exaggerated, the bass a bit "dry" and the comfort just doesn't even compare to the Sennheisers....

I have bought other head phones, but never ones that are of the "nicer" grade. I like the fact this came with the standard 1/4th inch plug adapter that my laptop uses and the 6.3mm main plug that i can use on my audio mixer and other stuff. Well worth buying if you have a tight budget like me....
