OK, checked out a few reviews on this baby and then looked around on the web. A few kept coming up about a hissing sound with the noise-cancelling on. Yes, it hisses - if you're not listening to music etc and are trying to block out the noise (as I wanted to use it for) but when you are actually tuned into the music etc, then the sound is very good and all encompasing.

Was it what I wanted? Not really - as I was hooked onto the noise-cancelling bit and dreaming of tuning the world out as I travelled on planes etc - without tunes, however, if you are looking for a half decent pair of headphones for your tunes or movies, then this model is the ticket.

Anything else to look out for? Have noticed that the headphones are affected by the wireless modem if I am too close to it, begins to make 'popping' sounds. But again - I don't want to put people off if they are looking for a solid sound for their tunes. I cranked it up on a MP3 and was impressed.

I have noticed with the Bose headphones that once you put them on, you can't hear anything with the noise cancelling on - not the case with the Able planets. But for the $, they are a very decent music choice....

I have been doing painstaking research in search of good noise cancelling headphones that were under $150. In my research, more reviews leaned towards the Able Planet NC300, due to durability and sound quality. I have heard that the NC1000CH's are vulnerable to damage. I cannot confirm this as this is my first day using these headphones. I have also heard that the headphones are large and would not fit a child; I have a smaller head and am a teenager, and I actually have to lengthen the headband. Despite the appearance of pictures, which I was deceived by, these are about the same size as the NC200 and NC300 headphones by Able Planet. The ear cups are a bit smaller than the Quiet Comfort 15's.

My first experience with Able Planet was on a noisy bus during a band trip; I listend to the NC200s, with which I was pleased due to the ability to hear all the instrumental tracks separately. I would prefer to give the NC1000 headphones a 4.5 out of 5, because even in it's greatness it is still inferior to the Bose Quiet Comfort 15's and Beats.

Pros:

- Clear sound that allows one to hear all instruments in an audio track

- Slight bass emphasis with no sacrifice to mids and trebles.

- Stable on the head; will not fall off or slip during listening; exerts pressure on the head but does not cause any discomfort

- Noise cancellation does the job when listening to music - I am able to hear all instruments easily due to the noise cancellation; this is all I wanted out of the headphones.

- As one who hates broken gear, I greatly appreciate the useable case versus the Bose AE2's useless sack.

- Watching movies is a pleasure - the soundtrack and speech mesh cleanly and are easily distinguished. I've heard music I've never noticed in movies before, and I've also heard speech elements I've never heard before. There's more to it detailed lower in the review, but the idea is that I've been thoroughly impressed by my new movie experience.

- Ear cushions don't cause ear pain over time, even though they are strangely stiff.

Cons:

- Noise cancellation does not do the job if music is not used; this is my experience at home, I have not been on a plane yet with these.

- Noise cancellation appears to be not well researched by Able Planet - random buzzes and rhythmic "shh" sounds (sounds like distortion), audible antinoise volume changes; all these could be worked upon and should be perfected for headphones that retail $349.99.

-Noise cancellation microphones are highly susceptible to wind, for example, if listening in the car with the window open, the antinoise makes popping sounds in response to the flapping of the wind.

- There are occasions in which, if I'm charging my MacBook Pro (Aluminum) in a wall outlet, then the antinoise in the right ear cup escalates into a clear, noticeable buzzing. However, this only occurs if the laptop is plugged in to charge; removing the charging cable instantly ends the buzzing. When my wrists don't touch the body of the laptop, the buzzing is present, so mostly when I'm typing the buzzing disappears. To me this seems like a shielding issue instigated by the electricity coming in from the charger, along with these headphones somewhat amplifying that buzzing. This buzzing is also present when I plug in my iPhone to a wall outlet and listen.

- Ear cushions are somewhat firm and inhospitable. It is not only leatherette, but the foam within is more stiff than what I'd expect having used Able Planet's NC200s.

My goal was to find headphones that could clearly and cleanly depict the sounds of every instrument in an audio track. These headphones deliver. While I cannot be sure if this is a result of their proprietary LINX Audio, I am very much pleased with these headphones. While these are the first noise cancelling headphones I have actually owned, I have tried many others including the Quiet Comfort 15, Beats, Able Planet's NC200, and a few cheap sets. I've also tried many regular headphones, and I will use those as references to evaluate the Able Planet headphones.

Against the Quiet Comfort 15's, the Bose wins out in terms of noise cancellation and comfort. The Able Planet's antinoise is evident when not listening to music. I turned on my bathroom fan without...
