Philips SHN2500/37 Active Noise-Canceling Earbuds

This review is from: Philips SHN2500/37 Noise-Canceling Earbuds

I got desparate just before taking a long flight, and purchased these for about $30. They did a good job of cancelling background noise on the plane, and for that purpose, I would highly recommend them. They even come with an adapter for jacks that require two plugs instead of one (like US Airways).

Overall, they sound pretty good. As with most earbuds, to get good bass, you need to make sure they are snug inside your ear.

When you turn on Noise cancelling, the volume increases, and this is typical because Noise Cancelling works by amplifying the sound and "subtracting" the outside noise that is being picked up. With a standard AA battery, you can get several hours of Noise Cancelling. When the battery begins to die, the volume actually drops, and it is much better to just turn Noise Cancelling off.

The earbuds fit well (there are 3 sizes included) and help to block a lot of external noise, so even without Noise Cancelling turned on you can block out of lot of unwanted noise.

And here is where Philips went wrong...They made the cable nearly 4' long (1.2 Meters), but in the middle, there is the bulky Noise Cancelling switch that holds the AA battery. Not a problem when you are sitting (eg. on and airplane, or at work) because you can just set it down. But for example, when you are walking, it hardly reaches your pants pocket, so you can't stand up straight, or it will pull the buds out of your ears. Leaving it hanging will do the same thing. In fact, this has been such an annoyance to me, that I never use these anytime I'm being active. And it's a shame, because they do a good job of cancelling lawnmower noise.

If you need a more general purpose solution and can spend a little more, I would suggest buying a set of Noise Isolation phones, which do not even require a battery. They are designed to completely block all external noises from getting into your ear canal.

However, if you plan to use them only for travelling, they are decent for the price. I have travelled with these for several months, and they still function well....

This review is from: Philips SHN2500/37 Noise-Canceling Earbuds

These were the only "in ear" headphones I could find that claimed any noise cancelling properties.

Having tried a few from the apple store, namely their in ear sony made model with switchable rubberized ends like the philips, and their set that wraps around the back of your head for around the $25 price point, I could never get either them to stay in. 10 years ago finding in ear headphones with a plastic or metal link between them that went up over your head was not an issue. More difficult to find those today, being that in ear models are convicted of causing more hearing damage.

I wanted something noise cancelling for business travel, but no so large that they would add much bulk to my travel bag. The noise cancelling feature was optional for me. I've been very interested in it, but not enough to spend hundreds.

These seem to be a decent mix. Sound quality is great for the price, and the sound cancelling is moderately effective. I enjoy a clear bass and these do pretty decent compared to the average in ear sony set that doesn't boast extra bass capability.

The noise cancelling works at least enough to not hear voices if a TV is on, or someone is talking near me, especially when trying to listen to music. As others have said, not as effective when the noise cancelling feature is used while not listening to music.

For covering the light stuff like typing, background hum, TV reporters voices, that stewardess' squeaky beckon, etc. these headphones do a fine job at a low price you won't mind losing if you forget them or lose them. One of the reasons I stayed away from the more expensive sets that cost more than my ipods........

This review is from: Philips SHN2500/37 Noise-Canceling Earbuds

I bought these earbuds to help combat some of the sounds that were bothering me at work. I'm a cubicle dweller and there are some noisy folks in my neighborhood. I wanted to block out voices, phones ringing, photocopier noise, etc.

These earbuds work pretty well and are reasonably priced. I find them comfortable to wear and they even help block some sounds without the noise canceling turned on. The rubber cups work like earplugs, so I can listen to my music at a lower volume and yet not be bothered by external noise.

I do hear a little "white noise" along with the music when the noise canceling is switched on, but it doesn't bother me. With noise canceling turned on I think the music sounds better, the volume is boosted a little but not super-loud.

I've also tried using these in the car and they block out traffic sounds, open windows, etc. pretty well.

I am happy with this purchase. If I'd had very high expectations I would have bought one of the top-of-the-line, super-expensive sets of noise canceling headphones. I just wanted something comfortable, effective and inexpensive, and these earbuds delivered that nicely....

The principal diference that I found it's the weight. The original it's lighter than this one. You're going to feel uncomfortable the headphones if you use for long periods of time. The look are very similar....

This review is from: Philips O\'Neill SHO8800/28 On-Ear Headphones (White Black Checked)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)

I usually listen with in-ear buds, but this is a nicely fitting pair of standard headphones with comfortable pads and you can adjust it easily to fit your head. The 'phones have an interesting op art design on the out earpieces, and the cord is a non-tangle turquoise length that feels almost as if it is coated with fabric, not rubber or plastic.

They fit well (snugly is right) and are comfortable. The cord is long, detaches from the headset. They are plenty loud.

The sound was not so great with audio books, but for pop music, the bass is nice and rich and the lyrics come through clearly. I tried some Lady Gaga, a tune by Cirque du Soleil with a lot of drums, and a Strauss work (Feuerfest) and some Willi Boskovsky. The sound was great, nicer than the earbuds for sure.

If you like a standard on-ear headphone, these are nice, especially for pop music. A bit more muted for classical and spoken voice, however....

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)

I received these headphones via the Amazon Vine program to check out and review, and first off I would like to say that I am impressed with the sound that comes from these "on-ear" phones. Nice low bass (could almost feel them shake on my head) with equally nice mids and highs (it depends on each person's EQ settings on their player).

I am more used to "over-the-ear" or "in-ear" type headphones, so this style was something new for me. However, I like the way they fit, lots of flexibility and adjustment of each side with thick padding all around ... very nice. I like that they fold flat for easy storage and that it has a tangle-free nylon mesh covered cable.

Another pretty cool feature is that there is a jack close to the left side headphone for easy break-away. Cable length is about 48" (I will have to use a small 24" extension at the office). Cable could have been a little longer, but it is adequate for normal use.

Overall, I would recommend these "on-ear" headphones ... The price is right, they sound very good, are comfortable, and are even stylish with the white and black check pattern....

This review is from: Maxell HP-200F Lightweight Stereo Headphones, Silver

I purchased the Lightweight Stereo Headphones (HP-200F) September 18, 2006 as a replacement for the default Apple earbuds that came with my Ipod. During my first night of using the HP-200F, they worked fine. I was actually impressed by their sound quality, particularly given their extremely reasonable price. However, the very next day, the audio in the left headphone began to cut in and out. I could only fix it by moving the cord around and holding it in an awkward position. I must reiterate that at this point I had had the headphones for less than a full day, I did not drop them or damage them in any way. While this was barely tolerable, I continued to use them because as I said, the sound quality was good, the price was right, and I had no other headphones. On the evening of the 20th, two days after my inital purchase, I attempted to listen to my Ipod using these headphones, only to discover that not only was the left earpiece cutting out, but now the right one was as well. Even after continued manipulation of the cord position, I could only recover slight audio in the right earpiece. These headphones suffered complete failure TWO DAYS after I purchased them. No matter how cheap the price, this is unacceptable. I've purchased a variety of Maxell products in the past, and I've always been reasonably satisfied with them. However, this experience has turned me off the brand for good....

This review is from: Maxell HP-200F Lightweight Stereo Headphones, Silver

Obviously these headphones are not for the audiophile. Nor are they for the person who expects anything they buy to last for a decade or more.

These headphones are for the person who wants tolerably decent sound reproduction in a compact package. Commuters, some travelers and others with modest expectations will love these. They fold into a pretty small package that can be tucked into a somewhat large package or a fanny pack or backback or mesenger bag or what have you. The headband has a wide range of adjustment and maintains the position you set it in.

The earphones are large enough to cover most ears and are comfortable for extended wear. (I've been wearing them while sitting at the computer for the laat five hours without any discomfort.)

If you don't demand much in the way of bass or treble, the audio range is acceptable. As I said, these headphones are not intended for audiophiles. That said, distortion isn't a problem even with the audio cranked up.

These headphones don't pretend to be noise-cancelling. They are just nice average headphones with adequate audio response and the added benefit of folding into a manageably small form factor. They are sturdy within a limited degree and should last for several months. Considering their price, the need to replace them from time to time is hardly a pain.

Overall, a good value as long as you don't demand or expect more than the product can deliver.

Jerry...

This review is from: Maxell HP-200F Lightweight Stereo Headphones, Silver

First of all, the price for these headphones is pretty hard to complain about. But from a company like Maxell, I was expecting at least a little bit better, even from a $6 set of headphones. The speakers in the HP-200 don't adjust their angle at all to accommodate the listener's ears, so you always feel as if they could just sat a wee bit better when wearing them. They aren't uncomfortable to wear, mind you, but they don't appear to give you the optimum angle for listening. As for the sound quality, you can turn up the volume on whatever your listening to without any significant distortion. But you may need to do that to hear most of the full range of your music. These sounded more 'mid-rangy' to me than balanced; there's some bass but not a lot, and likewise with the treble. Vocals and the middle notes of guitars and keyboards are almost too up front through the HP-200 as a result. I have a hard time recommending them for music as a result; you can certainly use them for that, as long as you're not finicky about what you listen to....
