This review is from: JLab Audio Miniblaster Portable Speaker for iPod nano 2G (White)

I ordered the miniblaster (2nd generation) for my husband for Christmas and it has incredible sound. I wanted to keep it for myself! The sound was awesome for such a compact portable unit. I thought he could use it while getting ready for work and bouncing from room to room w/o hooking and unhooking his IPod Nano. I love the fact it also comes w/ an adapter to save battery life. I just wish it came in other colors.....great job and great price. I can't wait till this Summer and try it at the beach!...

This review is from: JLab Audio Miniblaster Portable Speaker for iPod nano 2G (White)

I got this for my son at Christmas not knowing the slightest idea how it worked or how it sounded. He falls asleep every night listening to his ipod through this little speaker system. He loves it! I checked it out and was surprised at the power. It's loud and clear. I would prefer a little more bass but that's just my preference. These people were a pleasure to do business with. The system is easy to figure out and the service was about as speedy as it gets. I am one VERY satisfied customer!...

This review is from: JLab Audio Miniblaster Portable Speaker for iPod nano 2G (White)

If the sound quality that you're looking for can be equated with an old mini-transitor radio, you might be pleased. Even so, you would probably expect to pay around $15 for the product - not something in the $40 plus range! Like another reviewer, I had very low expectations for such small speakers but apparently not low enough. The speakers cannot handle bass at all and to avoid complete sound distortion you need to keep the volume very low which essentially forces you to literally be within a foot or two of the unit. Furthermore, there's no easy way to retreive your ipod once inserted! I feel I have been deceived by the 5 star reviews I used to make my purchasing decision and felt obligated to respond. The Miniblaster is a good concept poorly executed and I'm afraid I wasted my money....

Noise Canceling Ear-clip Style Headphone

Noise canceling ear-clip style headphone that produces 70% noise reduction when in active mode

In-line battery box with volume control

50 hours of use on one AAA battery (included)

30mm Driver

Frequency response 14Hz - 22kHz

Noise canceling ear-clip style headphone that produces 70% noise reduction when in active mode / In-line battery box with volume control

This review is from: Noise Canceling Ear-clip Style Headphone

This headphone does not conform well to the shape of my ear so they do very little to block or reduce background noise. They are very uncomfortable to wear for any length of time. The volume level is way too low, requiring me to crank either of my MP3 players to near max to hear audiobooks in a car or on a bus.

I do NOT recommend this headset. If you like ear-clip headphones, stay with the ones you have. "Upgrading" to these is not worth the price as the performance and "Noise Cancelling" is worse than my standard ear-clip headphone....

This review is from: Noise Canceling Ear-clip Style Headphone

I can not believe how bad these head phones were. One could not use them comfortably. They hurt your ears. As for as performance, I would rate them as a negative 5. I tried to use them on a Panasonic portable dvd player. There was not enough volumn to make any of the words on the DVD Movie. the sound of the aircraft drowned them out. I was sadly disapointed on JVC for letting a product of this out to the public. It would not be a positive image for JVC reputation....

This review is from: Noise Canceling Ear-clip Style Headphone

I returned these headphones as soon as I tried them. They have absolutely no noise-cancellation ability, they're not very comfortable and they're just clunky and a mess. I have tried and owned other noise-cancelling headphones for about the same price and they may not be the best but they do work, these do not. I only gave it 2 stars because I love the concept, now if someone would make some that actually work....

This review is from: Sennheiser HD438 Closed Circumaural Hi-Fi Headphone with Enhanced Bass

I've owned these headphones for about a month and feel I'm ready to review them.

If I could pick two words to describe these headphones, the words would be Natural & Immersive.

I own a couple other Sennheiser products: the EH350 and the HD560. Comparing the three, the HD438 is my favorite. They're easier to drive than the HD560 and they sound better & are more comfortable than the EH350.

Sources:

ipod 5.5g 30GB - Apple Lossless files

ipod 7g 160GB - Apple Lossless files

Denon PMA-250 Integrated Amp & Powermac - Apple Lossless files

Sound Quality:

Detail is very important to me, and the HD438 does disappoint. I hear all the little nuances in music that other lesser headphones (like the EH350) tend to smooth over. The HD438 has a pretty wide soundstage for a sealed headphone as well. Instruments are well separated as well. They have good bass, better than both the EH350 and HD560. I'd say the bass is neutral, not too boosted. Highs are clean and crisp, but not harsh in any way. These are the headphones you want for long, non-fatiguing listening sessions. Before breaking the headphones in, the mids seemed a bit recessed, but as they've broken in that problem no longer exists. Just beautiful, immersive, detailed music.

I listen to a lot of electronic music, and I find them very immersive and clear. They sound great listening to jazz too, cymbals sound very crisp and clear, and the other instruments sound natural. I also listen to some rock and ska, and I've been happy with their performance there as well. Bass is crisp and tight and the other instruments sound as they should. Since they sound so natural, they're quite intimate as well with other styles, like folk and classical.

There is one downside to these headphones I've found (if you can call it that). They're very revealing. If you have a bad recording or a bad source player, it's going to let you know. I tried em with some lower bitrate mp3s and AAC files, (128-192kbps) you'll hear graininess and artifacts that some other headphones smooth over.

With my ipod 5.5g, the bass is a bit lacking and the overall volume level is a bit lower than I'd like. In my opinion, you have to turn it up past 75% to get a reasonable level of volume.

With my ipod 7g, the bass is a bit fuller and there's a bit more detail and separation and there's a bit more headroom in the volume. I'd say 70% is where you'd want to be for a reasonable level.

My Denon PMA-250 has a ton of headroom. I only have to turn it up about 20% or 25% to get to a reasonable level. Given that, it has fuller and stronger deep bass when driven by this powerful amp.

Overall, I think they sound as good as my audiophile-grade HD560's, but they have a slightly darker sonic profile. I'd say these are headphones that will benefit from an amp, but it's not necessary in most circumstances.

Design & Isolation:

These are very, very comfortable headphones. I've had multi-hour listening sessions and have had no comfort issues whatsoever. The velour pads have a soft texture, but are firm enough so they cup your ears rather than sinking into your head.

They're sturdy headphones, with a single cable running out the left side. Included is a shorter & a longer cable that is easy to swap out depending on your needs. It also comes with a 1/4" adapter. At first I thought the outside design would bother me, but they're not as flashy as I thought they would be, which makes me happy.

In terms of sound isolation, they isolate a fair amount, but not enough to completely isolate you from the outside environment. They have a small amount of sound leakage, but really not very much at all.

Overall:

I think this is a great pair of headphones. They come with a 2 year warranty, and I've had very good luck with Sennheiser's quality in the past. If you're looking for a great sealed headphone that's comfortable, sounds beautiful & natural, from a quality brand, these would be a great choice!...

This review is from: Sennheiser HD438 Closed Circumaural Hi-Fi Headphone with Enhanced Bass

Just received these, so these are my first impressions. More to come later - long term observations, measurements and photos.

1) Very light, all plastic construction. The only metal I can see are the screws holding the vertical hinge above the ear cup for slight swivel action

2) The pressure on the ears is just about right to give a good seal to the head, but not to make them uncomfortable over extended periods. The velour pad material though is warm to the feel. Perhaps good in the cool, but in this warm spring it's very noticeable (I believe leather effect replacements are available from Sennheiser). The ear cups fit perfectly around my ears, but with no spare room. It may be that being 'over the ear', not 'on the ear' 'phones, the encapsulation of the ears retains heat (Later, I shall try my Bose QCII headphones with their pad material and compare the feeling)

3) Don't like the "wheel trim" chrome design. Black and plain would be more aesthetically pleasing to me, but I can't see t...

Klipsch Image X10i Audiophile Noise-Isolating Headset with 3-button Ap

Superior resolution and bass response from custom designed armature and patented oval eartips

High-quality, echo-cancelling microphone

3-button iPhone/iPod control (VOL+, VOL-, ANSWER/PLAY/PAUSE/SKIP+/SKIP-, Voice Control)

Patented Oval Ear Tips for best-in-class comfort and noise isolation

Includes five sizes of oval eartips and carrying case

Among the world’s smallest, lightest in-ear headphone designs, the Klipsch Image X10i Headset employs a wealth of micro-technology for long-wearing comfort and audiophile-quality listening. Plus, it includes an advanced microphone and 3-button remote for taking calls and controlling the music content on your iPod, iPod touch or iPhone 3GS.

Superior sound quality and crystal-clear calls

with long-wearing comfort

Superior Design for Clear Calls and Sonic Bliss

Based on the highly acclaimed Klipsch Image X10 headphones, the X10i offers the absolute best in Klipsch style, sound comfort and fit. It caters to discriminating, on-the-go listeners who are constantly playing music and taking phone calls.

Inside each ear piece, which is made of machined aluminum and finished in anodized copper, you’ll find an exclusive full-range armature micro-speaker with a tuned bass-reflex system that delivers lifelike dynamics, sonic clarity and booming bass.

The X10i positions its in-line microphone and remote at the yoke--where the two cables meet at chest level--to create a more natural feel when answering calls and controlling music. Because the microphone is a highly intelligible 360-degree design, you don’t have to talk down into it or hold it close to your mouth. The microphone also features echo cancellation, which keeps it from picking up surrounding noise, so you’ll always be heard crystal clear.

Make calls and control your portable player with ease

Luxurious, Long-Wearing Comfort

It doesn’t matter how great a pair of headphones sound if they are painful to wear. Unlike traditional, circular-shaped ear tips that put stress on the pressure points inside your ear, the X10i utilizes patented oval ear tips that naturally fit the shape of your ear canals. This makes them extremely comfortable and virtually impossible to feel. Additionally, these exclusive ear tips produce a perfect acoustic seal, which minimizes outside noise so you can enjoy your music at lower, safer volumes.

Expanded Compatibility, Including Apple iPhone 3GS

While the Image X10i serves as a pair of premium headphones for any device with a 3.5mm headphone jack, its microphone and remote system handles the music and voice control of the following Apple products: iPhone 3GS, third generation iPod shuffle, second generation iPod touch, fourth and fifth generation iPod nano models and the iPod classic 120GB. If you have an iPod touch or iPhone and Wi-Fi access, you can also use the Image X10i with VOIP (need an adapter for PC or Mac), Skype and iChat.

What’s in the Box

Included with the Image X10i In-Ear Headset is a faux-leather carrying case, compact carrying pouch, 1/4-inch adaptor for home stereos, airline adaptor, five sizes of patented ear-tips and an ear-tip cleaning tool.

What the Experts Are Saying

“In many ways, the Image X10i Headset mirrored the sound of Klipsch's WF-34 floor-standing loudspeakers. Both are extremely clean, crisp, detailed and fast.”

“The phones have laser-like precision and open the door to the smallest details of every recording. They are also very comfortable and so light that one can listen for hours without mechanical fatigue.”

“The Image X10is make a strong case for being “the reference” in-ear headphones. Overall, the Image X10is offer excellent dynamics, clarity and definition. Their combination of comfort and way with music makes for an easy recommendation. Simply put, they are the best in-ear headphones I've heard.”

--Todd Whitesel, AudioVideo Revolution (avrev.com), March 2010

"Definitely the best sounding consumer-grade in-ear headphones I’ve ever listened to. The price tag matches the sound quality however. If you want good audio fidelity on your phone headset, you’ll be hard pressed to find something better than these."

-- Jimin Brelsford, CrunchGear.com, March 2, 2010

This review is from: Klipsch Image X10i Audiophile Noise-Isolating Headset with 3-button Apple Control (Copper)

I've probably been using portable music players for at least 20 years now. First it was cassette players, then CD players and now MP3 (or other music/video file type) players. Progressively as I upgraded from one type of player to the next, I wanted an even better (i.e., not cheap) kind of player(s) which would give me more features and of course, better sound. It wasn't until more recently that I discovered it wasn't so much the player, as the headphones that made the big difference in sound. (Duh!) I don't know why I didn't bother to get better headphones until recently, but I guess it was because I didn't understand that the type of sound I was hearing wasn't nearly as good as what the source material was capable of giving me. (Especially for CD's) So I finally decided to stop using el cheapo's and plunk down some coin for a decent pair of headphones.

The first pair I bought was a few years ago and were the Bose In-Ear earbuds. The player I was using at the time was the Apple Ipod 5G video. Compared to the Skullcandy earbuds I was using before, they sounded like THE BEST sounding earbuds I had ever heard. (That I had heard, not that existed). I quickly became disillusioned with these, especially when wearing them as I worked out at the gym and they would constantly fall out of my ears as I worked out. Surprisingly, this would also happen when I wasn't working out, although far less frequently. I tried all the different size ear tips, but made no difference. I knew there were far better (more expensive) buds out there to try, so after doing some research and comparing, I next went with the Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5 pro earbuds. These had a bendable wire built-in to allow wrapping around the ears and fits deeper into the ears, which they did. Also, the sound was MUCH better! In fact, while waiting to get the X10i's, I sold my Super.Fi 5's and reverted back to the Bose to see how they measured up and after listening to them again, I can't believe I ever thought the Bose sounded good! The bass they give is so overpowering and muddy that it drowns out some of the mids and highs, making for a poor listening experience when compared to the Super.Fi 5's.

A little over a month ago, I finally upgraded from using some of the Ipod Nanos to the 64GB Touch (3rd Gen). This model has an in-line/voice control feature which I wanted to use immensely, but I didn't want to use the craptacular earbuds that came with the Touch. After doing a little research,...

This review is from: AKG Acoustics K28NC Noise Cancelling Headphones

It is unfortunate that whoever did the physical design for these headphones chose such a goofy folding design, because if it weren't for that, these would be excellent headphones.

The sound quality is excellent. The bass belies the small size. The bass may even be too strong for many, but it is quality bass, which is to say that it is reasonably uniform over the bass frequencies, and without the muddy sound that typically accompanies drivers that are underdamped. The frequency response is very uniform over the full audible range, and there are no obvious resonances or peaks anywhere. The noise cancellation circuitry works as well as any noise cancelling headphones that I've ever used or listened to.

Notwithstanding all that, I still can't recommend these headphones, because the folding design is goofy and highly annoying. If you study the picture, you will see that the hinges that allow it to fold on each side, are not oriented at right angles to the band. The hinges are set at an angle, so that instead of folding straight, one side folds toward one the front and the other side folds toward the back. There was no reason to do this, because the earcups are easily small enough to fold up within the band and still close the band most of the way. The intent was that the two earcups also rotate, so that they rest against each other face-to-face. They won't quite do that in the way that you would expect, because the pivots won't allow them to rotate far enough for that. It works better if you rotate the cups the other way, so that the backsides of the cups rub against each other. But it is still just goofy and annoying. Each and every time that you use them, you will look at it and wonder what in the world possessed someone to do this this way.

The stretchy sack that comes with it is just barely large enough to hold the headphones alone, much less the separate module. The two plug adapters just toss into the sack, and sooner or later they will fall out onto the floor of an airplane or train or whatever, never to be seen again.

The cord is ungainly, mostly due to the excess length of the section between it and the headphones. The headphones are able to be much lighter as a result of the separate module, but thus far no one has figured out a good way to do this. Because of the extra length of the cords, you can sort of it configure it however you like, by shortening one or the other of the two cables. You can find or make a small spool of sorts on which to wind the extra cord. I reduced the length of the cord between the headphone and the module to less than half what it was originally, so that it it works well for when the module is in my shirt pocket. The other option would be to use small wire ties and make it as though the headphones and the module were both connected into the plug.

The headband is also uncomfortable. The pads on the two points where each half of the metal band terminates with the other part sliding through, are much to hard to be comfortable. I wondered why this was different from the similar Koss headphones, so I compared the two. The Koss headphones have a much thinner pad, and the surface under the pad is completely flat. AKG chose to incorporate a rim on the four sides of that little square, with a recess for the pad. In effect, the greater thickness of the pad was made necessary by that recess, which was put there, ostensibly, for the pad. The recess is not needed, and were it not for the recess, the pad itself would not need to be as thick or as firm. I replaced the pads with some softer foam, and I added a short length of cloth-covered neoprene to the underneath of the metal band....

This review is from: AKG Acoustics K28NC Noise Cancelling Headphones

I just returned from my first trip with the K28NC headphones. The sound is incredible. The headphones are infinitely adjustable. They are easy to stow and very well designed. They are also well built. I believe that about 70% of the jet noise was blocked with the noise cancellation. They are very comfortable and I use them at home on my computer without the noise cancellation enabled. The battery is supposed to last about 20 hours. I've already gotten about 30 hours use on the original battery. I would (and have) highly recommend these headphones....
