Introducing the New Solitude® X Active Noise Canceling Headphones.

This review is from: Solitude X Active Noise Canceling Headphones

Bottom line... Great NC (perhaps the best in the business) but uncomfortable. They worked out VERY well for airplane travel. I will never go on a plane again without them.

My history with active noise cancelling headphones has been one of disappointment. I have never before been able to wear them for any length of time as they always had this annoying "pressure" that was irritating to me. The first was a pair of Sony's back when the technology first came out... many many years ago. About 4 years ago I picked up an RCA brand pair intended for travel. They are really lightweight and folding and cheap and not really meant for everyday use, but did help somewhat on that 24 hour plane trip.

I got these mosty because of a half the price Groupon, but I have had my eye on the category for a long time now. Based on reviews I found here at Amazon, I came to the following conclusions and figured I'd give these Solitude X NC headphones a try.

Bose is way too expensive for the quality received, you are paying for the highly marketed name.

Audio-Technica has good NC, but probably are not any more comfortable than these and they lack and fine tuning of NC.

Sennheiser were great sound for expensive price, very comfortable, but many reviews suggested it has very limited NC.

Sony just had too many 1 star reviews - they seem to have a quality control issue. That said, if I had to do it all over again, I'd probably get these for the comfort factor and rely on Amazon's return policy for the quality control issue and hope that if they were going to have an issue ever, that it would happen while they are still returnable.

I have been going back and forth regarding passive sound blocking headphones vs active noise cancellation. Active NC will give you a more peaceful experience if you are blocking out low-pitched constant hums, but it will have ($ per $) reduced sound quality and they are very battery hungry for every day usage, especially when you accidently forget to turn them off before you leave for the day, as I frequently do.

Some background: When I purchased these, I had just moved into a new office at work with a big duct inside the ceiling overhead that is very draining to listen to. Plus it gets very hot in here with 4 computers in my office, so I usually have a fan in the doorway pulling cool air in. So to drown out all that racket, I use headphones a lot to listen to music, however it gets tiring to be always listening to music as well, thus my search for NC headphones.

Back to the Solitude X. Auditorily speaking, I had no problem wearing them, with the active noise cancelling turned on, for hours every single day. I was not expecting that. I think it is partly due to the technology geared for airplane pilots, but also largely due to having a dial with which you can adjust it to find just the right balance of active noise cancellation. Most every other unit out there is 100% on or 100% off. No fine tuning. I find that my favorite position is about 75%. Less than that there is too much hum of the HVAC. More than that, the headphone start having a negative influence of their own. It is very nice to be able to fine tune the power.

Before I burned these cans in with 50+ hours of music overnight, I thought the bass was so muddy that I just could not listen to them without wincing. However, currently they are quite acceptable. Noticably muddy, but a heck of a lot better than your standard portable $50 headphones. No where near as nice as the AKG K 272 HD High-Definition Headphones that I ultimately wound up buying to use at work (no Active N/C but closed so they do work to block out some of that racket and the AKGs are more comfortable), but you are paying for the Active N/C circuitry. I would not want to take my AKG 272s on my travels.

I wore these Solitude X's for for about a month at work and they are about as comfortable as any on-the-ear-closed-earphone set can be. It is nice that the earpieces rotate so you can periodically change how they sit on your ears.

That said, I am knocking off one star due to comfort. I need to take them off now and again because they are not comfortable enough for wearing more than about 2 hours at a stretch.

And another 1/2 star for a wish to have better sound reproduction.

And another 1/2 star because while I was wearing them yesterday, they started humming a bit, so I re-adjusted the NC level and I heard this very loud electronic noise like trying to find a station on an very old radio. It was humming even more. I removed the batteries and put them back in again and the loud hum went away.

The metal adjustment is notched and can be made much larger and much smaller than I have them set at.

Since the cord is detachable from the headphones, you can wear it with just noise supression and no music at all without dealing with a dangling cord. They actually worked better than my $20 Peltor 97010 Ultimate-10 Hearing ...
