I've been searching for a set of ear buds to replace those awful OEM ipod buds. The 9mm Rain buds intrigued me as I needed something smaller than the ipod buds and I listen to a lot of music with horns and high ends. I've owned them for better than 2 weeks now and riding the tube to work has never been more enjoyable. I recommend these buds to people that have had comfort issues with the ipod buds and are looking for excellent performance and value. Very impressed with this product.

I should point out, as many do, that I'm not an audiophile, so this is laymen's terms. These are truly outstanding earphones. When I first received them, the sound was good. After letting them burn in for a few days, the sound really opened up, and is now outstanding. Unlike many ear and headphones that "enhance" the sound by boosting the bass or treble, these earphones deliver a more neutral sound, which for jazz, classical, or vocals is ideal. I tried them out, after burn in, on a variety of music:

Medieval Babes - Mirabilis

Sequentia - Voices of The Blood - Hildegard von Bingen

Erik Satie - Gymnopedie 1

The Essential Wynton Marsalis - The Prince of Denmarks March

Prokofiev - Lieutenant Kije Suite

Chief Ebenezer Obey - Ju Ju Jubilation

Cole porter - Anything Goes

The Ink Spots - I don't want to set the world on fire.

Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove

Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight

Ozzy Ozbourne - The Ozman Cometh

Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic

Kenji Yamamoto - Metroid Prime 3: Title Music

Theme from Star Wars

The Rain earphones performed beautifully throughout the entire selection. The trebles were clear and crisp, never tinny or harsh.

The bass was more than adequate, deep and rich. Bear in mind, you "hear" the bass with these phones, you don't "feel" it. That's how I like it, present but not overwhelming. If you like to "feel the beat" I would suggest looking at the Thinksound's Thunder earphones. Although I have not tried them out, they have enhanced bass.

The mids? This is where most of your music lives, and where the Rains excel. They are well-balanced, strong and clear. I was amazed at how much of the music I had been missing with my old phones, particularly vocals.

Isolation: As far as isolation, they rate very high. I use them on the San Francisco BART train, and I have no problems hearing the music. In contrast, using the earbuds that came with my Sansa Clip+, the music was barely audible over the noise of the train. I suggest trying out all four sizes of the included silicon inserts to find the best pair for your ears.

Construction: The overall fit and finish is excellent. Having owned then for a few months, and with normal use, I see no scratches, damage, or defects.

The wood housing gives the phones a very distinctive appearance. They are beautiful.

The cord is relatively thin with a rubber coating. While this diminishes microphonics (that thumping sound you hear from the cord bumping up against your body), the cord is prone to tangling.

Although thin, the cord is securely attached to the earphones housings. I know this because, on a crowded train, I have had them caught on another passenger's backpack and yanked from my ears with no damage to the earphones. Still, I would take care not to tug on the cord.

Speaking of microphonics, a sturdy little shirt clip, along with the light cord has eliminated the problem for me. All I hear is the music.

As far as the plug, not much to say other than I've never had a problem with crackling or losing the left or right channel in any of my electronic's headphone jacks (Sansa, computer, mini-system), so all is well there.

Comfort: The silicon inserts are thin, and form perfectly to my ear. The housings, although very solid, are feather light. I can wear these earphones for hours with no pain, discomfort, or fatigue. I should mention that although the silicon inserts are thin, I've had no problem with them tearing or degrading, just be sure to keep them clean.

Storage: As I said, the cord can become tangled, so I have chosen not to use the included cotton bag for storage. I've found that both my Sansa Clip, and Rains fit perfectly inside an Altoids tin. I laid a piece of thin packing foam on the bottom of the tin as padding. However you store them, I would take care to neatly coil the cord. I lightly wrap mine around three fingers, and then secure the loose ends with the shirt clip.

Overall: I did a fair amount of research, looking for a quality pair of earphones within my budget, and these are perfect. The Rains are comfortable, well constructed, and best of all they deliver clear, well-balanced, amazing sound. Originally, I bought them for my MP3 player, but I'm using them for everything.

I really wanted to love these. Very cool looking, reasonable price & good consumer feedback. My experience with the buds was quite poor, though. First, I completely understand how these in-ear buds require a good seal to sound their best. I also understand the whole "burning in" concept, that they'll sound much better after several hours use. I spent a good 30 minutes going through the fittings that came with these, assuring a great in-ear fit. Then, I turned on the music and got an instant headache from the all-high-end-no-bass-whatsoever experience (more than one type of source was used for the music, too). I tried desperately to be patient, removing them . . .and that's when I noticed the part of the wire that seals near the buds had come loose on the left bud. After thirty minutes. This didn't cause any audio issues, but it did leave an exposed place right where the bud & the wire connect.
