Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)

I use Holosync and purchased the Sony VDR600 as recommended with that program when I started it, years ago. The Sony headset is much more comfortable, the cushion is better and the headband is better. I also like the curled wire of the Sony pair. The Pioneer pair has a straight wire. The Sony pair was also a lot more expensive. But guess what - The sound was just a touch more crisp with the new Pioneer set.

The box was a bloody nightmare to open. It's one of those plastic sealed monsters, so brace yourself. The bass has a separate plug in - be aware of that also. And it comes with about a mile of cord.

I used these on an airplane and for the first time ever, heard the whole movie for the whole flight. WHAT a difference over ear buds and the $3 sets they sell enroute. GREAT for flying. I used them with my iPod and they picked up very very high frequency noise in the MP3. They are really good. But the cord is VERY long, so you wouldn't take these out for a walk with your iPod which is too bad because they are such a huge improvement over ear buds.

Finally we can use them plugged into the tv if one person wants to sleep and the other wants to stay up - it is super convenient to have an extra pair in order to do that.

The design of the Pioneer is very sleek. They look a lot better than the "haven't changed since the 1970's" Sony pair. All in all a great deal for the money and the sound is fantastic. I found them a bit uncomfortable after extended (an hour or two) wear and the cord is ridiculously long - that's why I dinged them a star....

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)

Let me preface this review by saying I was bitten by the headphone bug a couple of years ago. Its an expensive hobby, more then one would think at first glance. My current favorite pair of "cans" is the Ultrasone HFI-580 S-Logic Surround Sound Professional Headphones which cost a lot more then this pair does. So looking at them side by side is kind of like comparing apples to oranges. But the M390s tout their bass, which the Ultrasone's have plenty of to compare. They both are closed headphones, the pads cup your ears and the backs are solid. This design is unlike my Grado Prestige Series SR80i Stereo Headphone which are open, the backs are open and the pads sit on your ear.

I listen to all kinds of music. [...] To actually review these headphones, I first put on some Sade who has some bass laden songs, specifically No Ordinary Love. I switched to some alt metal next Mudvayne, Chromium and the like. I skipped through the thousands of songs on my iTunes to see if any stood out, and surprisingly one did, Al Green's Lets Stay Together. Right off the bat you notice it has bass. But its not tight, its fairly loose. The highs are a little bright. The sound stage is small. Sound stage is a way to describe how music in headphones sound. Small means it sounds like it is playing in your head vs wide, you are in a room. Overall though, they are not bad. They are pretty comfortable, more comfortable out of the box then the $299 retail Ultrasones. That has much to do with the wing design. I have another headset with a similar design, the Audio Technica ATH-A700 Headphones which are very comfortable. The one thing about headphones is that their sound changes over time until the drivers settle in. There is debate over the best way to get to headphone "broken in". Some say just by listening, others swear by playing "pink noise", a kind of wide range static into the headphone from times that very from overnight to a couple of days. The point of that is, this pair of headsets may sound better once they have been played for awhile, the treble or high notes might lose that sharp edge and the bass might get tight and less muffled. But even if they don't the M390s are not bad out of the box for someone who wants to feel bass in their music. I definitely delivers bass.

Pros

Comfort

Long cord (an extension cord is even included)

Lots of bass

DJ Cups (you can tilt one side all the out to listen)

Cons

Bright high notes

Mid-range is suppressed (lower volume then the lows)/veiled

Small sound stage

Ear Pads appear glued on, probably not replaceable without effort

Slightly muddy sounding, might clean up after some listening

Durable?

For the price, I don't think you can go wrong, especially if you are a bass lover. They deliver some intense music. They aren't the best made headsets, the ear cushions, while comfortable don't look like they would hold up to heavy use. I just paid almost half the price for a pair of ear pads to make my Ultrasone's more comfortable. The head strap looks flimsy. There are other great headphones in this price range. One I have I recommend is the Sennheiser PX 100 Collapsible Headphones, great sound from a small headphone. But I can recommend this pair, too. Just beware, you might find yourself heading down the never ending road to headphone nirvana....

For a nice bass flavored headphone that wont break the bank Pioneer has created a real winner here. The SE-M390 sounds like it should cost in the $150.00 range, a real deal/steal. Highs sparkle, mids are quite clear & present - not overbearing, and the bass is powerful, solid, and quite controlled. Quite a bargain in the $40.00 range.

Now, the build quality isn't the most solid, but it's good for stationary listening - just don't go tossing them in a bag or backpack. Remember, you DO get what you pay for.

4 stars for the sweet SQ, since it would have been 5 stars if the build quality was better.
