If you buys these, get the product replacement insurance, and keep checking the buds. They're like little critters that will just want to get away from you. I had the same customer support response as Quandry when I reported that the earbud 'cushions' or buds fall off the Brookstone Sound Isolating Earbuds (with retractable cord). The telephone customer service operator was polite, but I was basically told that it was my problem I had not kept my receipt--my credit card statement was not enough 'evidence' of purchase. Brookstone's online customer support had not responded to my complaint after almost a week (hence my call). I too made my purchase at an airport, but at a Brookstone store. I purchased one set for myself and one as a gift. Unlike Quandry, I had very little problem with the cable (there were a couple of times the retraction didn't work properly but I got the hang of it and it worked well after that), and really liked the earphones. I made the purchase because, as a Brookstone customer for some years, I trusted the Brookstone name. In fact, I purchased another set as a gift in less than a week after buying my own set. But the product has a serious design flaw with the earbud 'cushion'. The extra sets that come with the earphones are different sized, and they all also fell off. The people for whom I purchased the sets as gifts have had the same problem. They each have one more set of the earphone 'cushions' or buds left, but at the largest size that does not really fit properly. For myself, I now have a useless set of earphones that cost $35 and which gave me less than two months' use. It's a pity, because the retractable cable is great for travel, and the sound was good....

I bought this very overpriced item out of desperation at an airport. I needed one for a 4 hour flight.

Got on the plane and found that the right earphone doesn't even work. The wires are very thin and they easily tangle when you retract them--that is they tangle INSIDE the junky plastic cover. Then there is no way to pull the wires in or out without opening it with a Philips head screw driver.

Got home and called Brookstone and they asked for a receipt to replace it or refund my money. Unlucky me can't find receipt and paid with cash.

They offer NO help -- it's my problem that they sold me a piece of junk.

When I told them the airport where I got it, got the snotty answer "We don't have a store there." I told them it was a magazine/gift shop. They told me that for the warranty I have to go through the store!!! What? Some little gift shop at an airport 1600 miles from my house is responsible for the fact that a Brookstone product doesn't work?

When I told customer service they are cheating me they disagreed, yet I have a piece of junk and they have my $35.

I've been using earbud earphone since 1991, and this is not only the most expensive pair (more than ipod earphones, you'll note) I've ever bought (only out of necessity), but also the chintziest material and worst service.

It's the first and LAST product I'll ever buy.

Run don't walk away from Brookstone!...

Pros: Good sound for the price. Durable - last several years even with frequent use. (This is my second pair) Good for dampening sounds on airplanes or in noisy locations. Good sound quality - much better low range than similar models I've tried. Comes with several soft ear buds in different sizes, and is more comfortable than cheaper buds. Retractable storage is convenient when traveling, and prevents the clutter and tangles of normal buds.Cons: Retractable case is heavier than regular cables, and without a clip for attaching to clothing, it moves around a lot (especially at the gym). Not recommended for jogging (unless you do what I did - glue a clothing clip to the case). Sound dampening could be better....
