This sound soother is a great little machine. Its small and very light weight.

It can easily fit in a pocket and be taken anywhere. The sound is very clear through

the earbuds which are included. They even went so far as to make a shield that slides

up over the display lights so it doesn't light up a dark room. It also has a clip on the back

so you can wear it clipped on you or use the clip to wind up the earbuds. Plus, they

give you 15 sounds to choose from. Plus, it has multiple timer

settings, too.

Given what I paid, (under $5), its great.

Now the disappointing part. Of the 15 sounds, I've only found one that I can listen to

when trying to fall asleep that is done in such a way that I can't easily

detect the loop. Almost all the sounds are so short that you can hear exactly

where the sound ends and restarts! Maybe some of the sounds would be less

obvious in a noisy place, but laying in a quiet room, these looped sounds

are very obvious.

I wanted to give this product 5 stars, but the downfall makes me give it only 3.

It was a well designed, well engineered product, otherwise. What a shame

the sound clips are so short! I'd rather have had only 5 or 6 sounds that were not

obviously looped than 15 that are.

Still, I do use my one sound on some nights. A mountain stream sound....

The Sound Soother by Jenson is just what the doctor ordered! I work in an office where the supervisors have loud, boisterous conversations with their friends. They also put their speaker phones on the highest volume. Their offices have doors and ceilings that they opt to not use; we have cubicles without doors or ceilings. It has become downright discouraging to go into work every day.

Since I purchased the Sound Soother by Jenson, my work life has taken a 100% positive turn-around. The white noise works GREAT and I can finally get some work done without noisy distractions. This is the best little machine going!! It has 3 timer controls, volume is great, about 25 different sounds from which to choose, AND CAN BE WORN ON YOUR SHIRT OR PANTS!!!

Just LOVE that little machine! I even bought an extra one for home!

Introduction

The Jensen Sound Soother, model JSS1000, is dedicated to a single goal: playing soothing sounds so that you can relax, read, sleep or work without interruption. It is not an alarm clock, AM/FM walkman or MP3 player. Instead, the Jensen Sound Soother JSS1000 provides 15 different sound choices, including Babbling Brook, Gentle Waves, Train Trip, Gentle Rain, Springtime Storm, Ocean Surf, Seaside, Rainforest, Heartbeat, Country Pond (frogs), City Life (roadside), Country Bird, Wind Chimes, White Noise and Whale Calls.

Overall Impression

The size of the unit is small enough to clip to a belt or carry in a bag without feeling intrusive. It runs on two AAA batteries, which are hard to access because the cover is located under the belt clip (the clip does not swivel). Overall construction is good. Unlike The Sharper Image Pocket Sound Soother AM/FM walkman, this unit seems as if it can withstand a fall without shattering. The control buttons are rubberized and easy to operate, and can be protected by the sliding plastic cover mounted on the front. There is a nonstop play option as well as a 15-, 30- and 60-minute sleep timer.

With 15 sounds to choose from, the Jensen Sound Soother JSS1000 provides greater diversity than most products of the same type. Example: No other unit -- not even those currently produced by The Sharper Image -- offer Whale Calls to my knowledge. The Springtime Storm (with thunder) is also quite good when compared to a similar sound choice offered by the HoMedics Sound Spa Classic and the Conair SU7. The best of the water sounds, in my opinion, is Babbling Brook. The audio loop is far less noticeable compared to the rest (more on that later). Seaside is more of a dockside sound, punctuated by the cries of circling seagulls. The gulls are convincingly realistic, but the fast tempo combined with the brief loop makes Seaside less than relaxing. Fortunately, there is an Ocean Surf alternative with no bird calls whatsoever. Unfortunately, like most products featuring a surf sound, the waves rush in very quickly. The surf sounds would be far more soothing if wave sets broke at a slower pace.

There are two sounds that I wish manufacturers of these products would leave entirely out. The Heartbeat noise is generally associated with infant sleep devices, and since you won't be strapping these headphones on an infant -- or at least I HOPE you won't -- the Heartbeat could have been replaced with a selection adults find attractive. (My pick would be the sound of wood burning in a fireplace.) Likewise, I would NOT have included "White Noise" in the design since a pair of earplugs or a nearby fan or air purifier can provide the same noise-blocking benefits. (I'd rather see the "White Noise" become something identifiable, such as "Summer Breeze" [a bit of wind whistling around the eves before a summer storm].)

Of all the audio samples, Rainforest is probably the most complex and diverse. Rainforest is also the closest sound choice that can substitute for the glaring omission of crickets (also known as "Summer Night" on competing sound soothers). Finally, this unit includes a three rather unique mechanical noises, including City Life (passing cars), Steam Train and Wind Chimes (metal, not wood chimes). Regardless of sound choice, however, samples are quite brief -- about six seconds compared to 10- or 20-second loops on competing products.

General Thoughts on Sound Soother Product Design & Marketing

With the exception of the Wind Chimes, I wish manufacturers of these typ...
