My Koss in-ear phones died (or rather one ear died which always drives me nuts) so I went out the other day to Newbury Comics and picked up a new pair of Wicked Jawbreakers Headphones.

These are real cheapies at about $[...] for a set. Surprisingly enough though they're damned decent headphones for something so cheap. While they don't cancel ALL noise around you, they do dampen it down enough that you can thoroughly enjoy your music (Or just barely hear your 1 year old when he yells at Dad for more goldfish crackers). My test run was on a rush hour train so that gives you a rough approximation of the ambient noise level. I didn't have my favorite piece of reference audio music with me at the time (The Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem in case you're curious) but I did have a bunch of music on my ipod which is familar enough to me that I knew what the nuances in the music SHOULD sound like.

If you can hear the difference between an iTunes purchased song, a song uploaded from a CD, and a song originally digitized off a casette tape, that's a decent pair of headphones. (Yes, I do have things I've ripped from casette to cd to iTunes. Some recordings just can't be found any more folks)

If you can speculate about which manufacturer of electronic keyboard they used on the studio recording, that's decent headphones. (Sounded a whole lot like a Kurzweil doing it's best imitation of a Leslie Organ to me. And having heard both the Leslie and the Kurzweil imitation synth I should know the difference.)

If you can tell what type of mics they used from the clipping of the singer's diction, that's decent headphones. (Sounded like Senheiser e614 to me)

Now to see how long these hold up before breaking....

I always expect that headphones are going to break. They are frail little beasties and we put them through a lot of abuse by virtue of how we use them. This is why it's just not worth it to buy expensive. I've done it but it wasn't worth the money I paid. I won't bother doing it again especially when I can find phones as good as these for just $10...

I bought a black pair of these from my Navy NEX store for $15, and I'm glad I did. When listening to music on my Motorola Droid, it sounds very clear and full. I thought at first that the clarity of the highs could be better, but found that I was just pushing it into my ear a little too far. These things sound great even compared to the $75+ dollar headphones my friends have. As for the bass- it's like having a subwoofer next to you. I love my bass, and (among other things) that's where these excel. For the price of two fast food combos, you'd really be a fool to pass them up....

Not bad. My Koss KE29 still sound better but these guys definitely blow any other in ear headphones I have had out of the water. Lots of bass! Not that annoying high pitched treble sound.
